I'm thinking of getting into Savage Worlds as a multi-genre rpg. Any thoughts?
I've tried GURPS and it's too crunchy. I've tried FATE Core and it's not crunchy enough. Where does Savage Worlds stand on the spectrum?

Savage Worlds is cool. GURPS want to get things right in terms of being realistic. Savage World wants to optimize for fun. But in terms of its mechanical outlook, it's fairly conventional, unlike Fate and it's narrativist approach to things, where the players have their hands in the meta-aspects of plot.

The group at my LCG is open to new things, but they mostly do Pathfinder and 40k, so I think they'd number grind the shit out of GURPS and just shake their collective heads at Fate.
I'm thinking of springing a Weird West one-shot on them to see how they react to Savage Worlds.
Any weird quirks I should prepare for? The Bennies stuff and the Initiative Deck looked like they might take some adjustment.

Init deck can be removed easy, just roll a d12, 12 is an ace, it's close enough.
Benny management is kinda integral.

Start off with just reading the basic set. You can skip the (dis)advantage/skill lists for now.
Use not everything without restriction, for along that path lies madness.
Use not only the barebones essentials, for that shit's pretty boring.
Figure out what you want to play using GURPS, and get the associated books. They usually have premade advantages and character options. Also, most of the stuff in the main expansions (Magic, Space, and the like) can be useful in any system, so you should...

More specifically, I was thinking of an apparently medieval setting with swords and sorcery but that also has robots and modern guns popping up infrequently

On this world, (nearly?) all humanoid races are from other planets and arrive through the Tower, which I’ll cover to get this party started. This covers all your 3.5 vanilla races and bullshit but feel free to jazz up your own and make this interesting, since we’ve all seen the vanilla bullshit and a lot of us are clearly sick of it. Also I’m not 100% on how I want to mess with magic functions but so far I’m sure that Raise Dead and similar magic might work without a hitch, or might produce highly unpredictable and truly horrific results. I was thinking maybe ley lines or areas of instability which produce random antimagic or wild magic zones. But I guess I’ll leave that to you folks. Side note: I haven’t restricted any books to my players for this, so I don’t see why we should start now. Also here's a book that I used for a few things on the planet so far.
The Tower of Broken Worlds
The highest floor of this giant circular tower on the northern side of the inland sea is where all new species arrive. They always must proceed with the same ritual of descending the tower to see the stories of those who came before, and meet the gatekeeper (Hunefer, CR25 who may or may not have an 18HD mummy buddy with optional floor-based puzzles/traps) who explains they must build a new floor of the tower before they are allowed to leave. The highest floor is the 198th and is mostly completed, but the next arrival will be building the 199th....

The Scarlet Jungle
Second to last newcomers were a Druidic people and settled near the lake in the middle of a big jungle. They may be alive or dead but everyone else assumes they fucked up because now the entire northern half of the jungle is made of meat and very few things there are cannibalistic.

How often do you insert religions in your settings that are more than 'sun god' and 'god of booze'? I'm working on a setting based in a semi-realistic renaissance era and I was hoping /tg/ would be my soundboard on the major religious division in the setting. I have a mild anxiety that players will challenge me with 'why is x' and 'that makes no sense' comments so I like to have a very well thought out setting before I even begin to assemble a party. Help me create a great, unique, but still very evil villain.
The last several campaigns I've run have been very morally grey, with the antagonists being evil but not EVIL. I've decided that I want the villain of my next campaign to be a black hearted, conniving, self-serving, society destroying undead lord, but I don't want to sacrifice the intrigue my players have come to expect from my campaigns.
What motivates this villain? Is he ancient, or only a couple hundred years old? Perhaps he is creating an preparing to create and undead army, perhaps not, either way he's biding his time, why?
I'm not afraid of tropes or ideas that are difficult to DM, things like "chosen one," macguffins, time travel, evil cults, complex political intrigue, its all fair game. I just want a unique and memorable villain that manages to be totally black and white evil without being stupid or forgettable.

Undead lord who has been secretly ruling the realms for centuries has decided that the farce needs to come to an end. Starts turning his powerful puppets into things which can spawn more undead under their control (bodaks, shadows, wights) which spread his dominion at an exponential rate. The undead retain their personalities but are evil. They demand to be taken just as seriously in the senate/wizards guild.
Alternately, a fallen Druid "blighter" who uses natural energy as fuel for his spells...
