I've got a track with two basses, the main one is fairly low but lacks in the really low frequencies so I added a sub bass.

Should I high pass the main bass higher than I would if it was the only bass track?

What even is a "good" drummer?
Like what does a good drummer even offer musically?

I hear this shit, and I just think it would take a lot of fighting just to get this nigga out of the way.

Here. Here's a drummer for you.

how come literally every "conscious rapper" i've ever heard of buys into 5% nation and/or NOI garbage? Doesn't being conscious mean being above narrow minded cult like thinking.

Ever since I've heard TPAB I can't take any of this shit seriously anymore. Most "black power" bullshit is just hypocrisy. When I listen to Public Enemy I realize that what they are advocating is not so much the liberation of black people from the prison industrial complex but the right not to be criticized. The main message is "yeah I am a homophobic, misogynist anti-semitic piece of shit but MYY PEOPLE BEING PERSECUTED G! ONLY GAWWWWDDD CAN JUDGE ME"

How come not a single of these fucks has said "No farrakhan, a UFO is not going to come down and kill all white people. No farrakhan white people were not created 5,000 years ago by a black scientist with two heads. No Farrakhan siding with Scientologists makes you a corrupt piece of shit, you don't represent my people." Instead they line up behind this wrinkled old tay zonday lookin motherfucker like he is their god. And we, the audience, are supposed to regard this hypocrisy as "knowledge" all because they use bigger words and wear misplaced african garb

Because you're listening to late 80s/early 90s rap
>>
Because 'conscious rap' is hip-hop's equivalent to political punk
The lyrics are shit, but the delivery still has a chance to be good.
>>
Conscious rap as a term was actually pretty dumb, pretty much anything that wasn't gangsta rap was called conscious.

People accuse others of doing this often, but does anyone ACTUALLY do this?

Like, to an extent, sure—I probably overestimate TPAB because of other people's opinions, and cognitive dissonance/wanting to be accepted by social groups occur. To an extent.

But, like, if I can't get into Merzbow, or something (which I can't), I'm not going to pretend to like something I flat-out just don't get.

I like that album.

How do you know whether I'm pretending? I could be, I could not be. Hard when lots of people say it.
>>
>>55355134
Oh, I don't think Merzbow fans "pretend" to like the music. It's just that "pretending" is an accusation I've heard for a variety of genres/artists that I wonder whether it's just an inane argument, or whether there's something more to that.
>>
Merzbow is shite. I still like to play it at parties though to piss people off.

OK guys, let's be civil this time. Remember to post covers if you can. The past is in the past. Lets not insult other posters and we will all have a good time :^)

So I really enjoy guys like Aphex, Squarepusher, FlyLo, Prefuse 73, J Dilla, Venetian Snares, World's End Girlfriend, etc…

But for the most part, other than Flying Lotus (who works with Thundercat) and Squarepusher (who's a virtuoso bassist), most of these kinds of artists don't have instrumental virtuosity in their work. Like, guitar shredding stuff, or super technical playing with a physical instrument, in general (since most of them, as far as I can tell, are music producers first and foremost, and don't play any instrument to a highly advanced degree).

Can you guys recommend any other artists who would fall into this (kind of broad) sound? Like, people who take both technical skill with a physical instrument as well as bleep-bloop stuff seriously.

And I don't mean sampling (like Amon Tobin sampling jazz stuff for Bricolage), either. I mean artists that use electronic sounds along with great instrumental playing that was recorded specifically for that record.

Honestly, in an even broader sense, people like Pink Floyd would count, I guess, though they're by no means guitar shredders or anything.

So, recommendations for these kinds of artists/albums?
