Well the 303 only accepts up to 64mb Smartmedia cards which are a pain in the ass to get hold of and not cheap as they are obsolete.
The 404 accepts up to 1gb Compact Flash which are still fairly annoying but at least more widely available than Smartmedia.
The 404SX will accept up to 32gb SD cards for max capacity and has software for easy sample management but loses the vinyl compression effect which is widely loved by SP users.
Why use these over software and a midi controller?

Neither has more importance, rather a piece will find a balance between both. However, I would say that any piece requires at least a bit of each to have quality.
Jazz and western classical are very much opposite in regards to performance/composition, but classical still allows for some moments of interpretation (e.g. suggested ornamentation or shifting tempo) and jazz pieces do need to have an element of predetermined composure to avoid being scattered (even an avant-garde jazz performer will have something in mind before he improvises)

Ask people at work what they like to listen to. Make a pandora shuffle mix of their suggestions for a few weeks and see what they like/dislike. Then make your own mix of stuff that is bearable.
