Starswirl the bearded created a time travel spell and never completed a written copy to allow anyone else to manipulate time to the same scope. Limited the known completed variant to a week. Starswirl also created the dimension traversing mirror, demonstrating his ability to manipulate both time and space.
The season 5 finale episode ends with the scroll he created, that had been modified by Glimmer, opening another time hole by itself and vanishing into it. My theory as follows.
Starswirl the bearded used his magic to jumped forward into time, using parallel dimensions to find the best possible future outcome for Equestria. After finding a future where a single group of friends was able to keep balance in Equestria and bring harmony to it's full potential; he begins setting events into motion to make sure this Equestria would follow suit. Even going so far as to limit his own potential in order to make a better future, such as purposely not finishing his final spell, knowing Twilight would finish it and become an Alicorn.
Using what he saw in the future, he even knew that one day, a very specific pony would get her hooves on his time travel scroll and try to change history with it. However Twilight would eventually talk her down and bring her to the side of harmony. So he made one final addition to his time travel spell, one small hidden gem in the scroll that noone would spot. He made it to once the events of S05E25-26 finished, the spell would activate and transport the scroll back into safe hooves.
Whether my theory is absolutely garbage or not, there is an important question to be asked. WHERE DID THE SCROLL SEND ITSELF AT THE END OF THE EPISODE?
