Would going to the range once or twice a month be enough? How important is the rifle? My only semi-auto right now is an sks, and I do "ok" with it same for my 1911. How would I guage when I need a newer rifle or handgun?

That is pretty cool. If you really want the survivalist usage for it I would go with a 20 gauge 22 combo rifle. But depending on cost, I would do it.(cost being 250 or less)

I had one but got rid of it. It only worked reliably with Winchester T-22. If I used anything else it misfired every 3 or 4 shot.
Pros - Lightweight, compact, easy to carry in a backpack, fun to put together, average accuracy out to 25 yards, everyone wanted to have a shoot whenever I pulled it out of the pack.
Cons - Jamamatic with almost every type of ammo, crap accuracy at longer than 25 yards, trigger assembly had some slop in in when assembling it, always felt 'fragile' when put together.
Get yourself a takedown Ruger 10/22. I have never regretted trading up.

Looks like some kind of washer or shim. It probably needs to go back in, but it doesn't look broken. Good luck trying to find where it came from.
I've got an m&p 9 and I haven't seen anything like that in my gun, I also had it apart to do a trigger job a while back. Only thing I could see that going on would be the takedown lever to keep it from falling out the side? Mine used a little spring thing to keep it in, but maybe they're different.

Yeah I get it your DIs brainwashed you into thinking you're a special snowflake and so different from the Army™, but why get this autistic about this terminology when both roles are nearly identical? They are effectively soldiers who fight on land, where's the shame in saying that? To me "soldier" is just another generic term like "fighter" or "warrior". And it makes it so awkward to refer to all land-based troops with one term. "Troop" sounds retarded and it doesn't refer to one individual.
