Could someone please help me understand the position of RTO?
I understand the importance of keeping in touch with command, but how exactly is manning the radio a complex enough task to warrant someone specializing in it rather than it just being included in general training?
Or why aren't squad-commanders handling it since they're the ones that have to communicate with command anyway?
Are an RTO's responsibilities so focus-consuming that they don't get drawn into the fight as much as a regular rifleman?
Will RTOs be rendered obsolete by more thorough integration of communication gear into the infantryman's gear?
Apologies if I come across as ignorant. In truth I'm just a curious history buff who doesn't know as much about the military as he probably should. Thank you in advance for any information /k/.

Yes, slightly as they're either communicating or staying by the SL / PL as he communicates.

Not until you can squeeze down that amplifier, radio and battery into a small enough space.
Inna FDF they tend to come with a toughbook as well, depending on the level of command and unit.

Fancy switches and settings that you can learn and remember with 1 hour of training and maybe 2 hours of usage. Give a grunt a radio and he'll probably fail to make it work, or even do basic troubleshooting with it.

So it's mostly an issue of how cumbersome they are and they're relatively easy to use?

So there's not really a practice of just using the RT as a wireless conduit and patching command into the SL/PL's headset? Or is that impractical due to concerns of jamming or the like?
Also, do SL/PL s update command pretty constantly in firefights, or is the RT only being used some of the time, thus freeing the RTO to act as a rifleman?

Hey guys forgive me if there is another thread more accurate and or established first and foremost.
Ok so i found these going through old stuff my parents owned. Practice is a lot of fun. Id recommend to anyone into weights with a disdain of cardio.
I was wondering how i could make them better. Maybe oil them? Or wrap with a grip tape? Anything even general usage discussion would be cool as youtube is mostly filled with non combat techniques and a lot to sift through.

Help me out here /k/.
My uncle is pretty much ready to kick the bucket at this point. I was over at his house today to help him with some computer stuff, and we talked about my grandfather's rifle, which will be left to me.
Unfortunately, since it was only in passing, I only got a little information about it. It's a Savage 99, bought in the 50's, and uses a cartridge that isn't made anymore.
I was hoping to get an idea of what this might be exactly (Google has shown me a bunch of different rifles for the Savage 99), and what cartridge this is. He said he had a couple boxes of rounds, but they would have to be reloaded to get anymore as far he knew.
This will turn me from nogunz to onegun, so any help is appreciated.

It shoots the savage .300 which you can still buy online. It's a fun brush gun but the round is hard to find since there are better rounds out there. Get it, clean it, cherish it, and when you get the chance put a few rounds through it.
Bumping. I should also note that the gun was bought on layaway in the 50's, so it would be safe to assume that it was a recently produced model at the time.

They're impossible to find these days and everyone always wants $150+ for them. I managed to find one after like a year of casual searching for $150 even but damn, at that price you may as well get a Mav88.
