I'm going to buy my first pistol today, to use for home defense and CCW if possible. I have $500. What should I look at or stay away from?

You're gonna have to look towards compact-subcompact guns, buddy.
Unless you are LARGE or have the body type to conceal carry a full size with little to no problem, you'll find out real fast the nitpicky bullshit world of concealed carry a handgun.
Now with that said, cut out all the iffy manufacturers (like Taurus as >>29952731 said) and go with more reputable brands and product lines. Then go rent them out or hold and fingerfuck them at stores to see which is more comfortable to you. You're putting your life and life of loved ones on it, so there's no reason to go special snowflake just because a brand is "so mainstream".
No one gives a fuck if you're stabbed or shot with a malfunctioned Remington R51 in your hand.
You can go special snowflake after you get a good handle on shit and know a bit more on what works, doesn't work, and what needs some effort in order to work.

I've been wanting an 92 series Beretta for awhile. After figuring out what I wanted, it seems like the most inexpensive options is just getting an M9A3 decocker model. I thought about buying a Vertec and having it converted or buying a 92G and having the frame reduced, but in the end it would be about the same price. Or rather, for the prices I've seen M9A3s going for, if anyone ever had them in stock.
Just wanted to know if anyone has one, what they think, like or dislike, how much they paid. And i guess a general Beretta 92 thread.

It's an evolutionary upgrade to the venerable S-300 system that the USSR have been using for a long time.
What it does is shoot down aircraft from very long range, and the idea is that a few S-300 batteries can deny large swaths of airspace to NATO aircraft.
How well the S-300 works is a lot of guesswork. It puts up very good performances in trial firings and NATO pilots speak highly of it when practicing against them (Slovenia inherited a battery, and the US bought some post collapse of the USSR). However it has never fired a shot in anger.
However, vatniks talk about the S-400 constantly, to the degree that the presence of an S-400 within 400km of aircraft causes them to spontaneously explode out of fear.

Forcing them to take out the missiles first, or operate stealth fighters for CAS.
It can shoot down missiles, but you wouldn't want to waste them on anything less than a cruise missile. The S-500 is an even more advanced version, but is more aimed at taking out ballistic missiles.

What are some good affordable gloves for shooting and general /k/-related hijinks?

WELL, a lot of people recommend Mechanix as a cheap go-to, but if your handgun sports a beavertail then it's a shitty glove for that. There's too much excess webbing between the thumb and trigger finger, which gets hung on your beavertail when you grip for a draw.
The Oakley flight gloves are a standard, but have obvious drawbacks and aren't QUITE as sturdy as you would hope.
Wiley-X anything seems to be good.
Hatch anything is awesome.
All flight glove designs have a pretty slick palm material and they do this really fucking weird bunching up at the tip of your fingers, because they aren't box-cut.
Those overbuilt looking Blackhawk gloves with the Velcro closure on the back of the hand (I don't remember what they're called but there are pictures of them everywhere) have always been awesome. But hot. But still awesome.
Everyone swears by PIGs.
Someone mentioned that the cheap Under Armor football gloves are great for weapons manipulation but I'm only mentioning it because I have no experience and maybe someone will chime in for more hivemind info.

Been using pic related for a year now.
Army infantry spending alot of time innafield and they're still completely intact. no loose threads, no holes innapalm or fingers, velcro still holds tight. Been wet and muddy and I just throw them in the washer and they come out fine. They fit my hand very well too, makes grabbing shit out of pouches a non issue.
Outdoor research ironsights are my favourites. I liked pig fdts

You are making a lot of incorrect assumptions about knives for self defense.
1. Self defense knives are not for brandishing.
Unless you want to risk being stabbed or attacked violently with a blunt object. Being threatened with a knife puts people in an actual fight/flight stance. If their brain chooses fight, then they will attack you with intent to utterly destroy you and any chance you have of hurting them with that knife.
2. Stabbing or slashing someone with a knife does not stop them from attacking you.
Most videos you've seen of people being stabbed to death in rekt of gore threads don't incapacitate the victim until they are stabbed close to a dozen times, with a giant kitchen blade knife. And this is stabbing, not slashing. Slashing does next to nothing other than make someone bleed while they attack you.
3. Self defense knives are for immediately incapacitating the victim.
It must be able to incapacitate an attacker with as few motions between the draw and attack as possible. This means that your knife to keep thugs away must be an instakill knife.
So to recap,

Sure. Same advantage it's always had. It's not that hard to bring militias up to speed compared to most other civilians, and the organisation's a big advantage.
