Thanks a bunch.

I can't really make sense of the UK's administrative divisions, honestly. Like on my map, England is broken into ceremonial counties, so second-order divisions – which is the same as yours, but there are still some differences. Scotland however is divided into council areas (second-order) on mine, and... something else on yours. Wales on mine is split into unitary authorities (second-order) but on yours they're more general.

On both of ours, Northern Ireland is divided into 6 counties – when in reality, it should be 11 districts, and the counties have not been used as official administrative divisions since the early '70s.

FUCKING UNITED KINGDOM REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>57646417
Britain is a very old country. You're talking about a thousand years of relevant history. Countless micro-movements of borders due to local issues and the like. Many years ago, physical terrain also dictated territorial boundaries, i.e. rivers and hills were not easy to get over and so they often form the boundaries. Add that to multiple different groups invading and settling, and a large number of political acts unifying different territories and countries in different time periods, you have a very detailed and confusing system of boundaries.

The USA is the opposite. Large areas of land quickly demarked by a 9(relatively) small number of people results in large, easily defined jurisdictions.

>>57647903
That's not what I'm talking about, I more-or-less understand the history of the divisions and the countries – see my comment on Northern Ireland's counties.

What I don't understand is why maps of the UK are so inconsistent with displaying these divisions. At any given point, there should be only one set of second-order divisions – the same way that there's only one set of countries, first-order divisions, within the UK, regardless of their individual histories. But for some reason, every map seems to have a mix of first-, second-, and even third-order divisions, sometimes along with a few historical divisions thrown in for good measure.

Could you explain why most modern maps seem to divide Northern Ireland into counties, rather than the districts which have been officially used by its government for almost half a century? Are all these maps made by Republicans, or am I just poorly informed?

For example, my map includes Rutland, the previous map does not. Rutland has been a unitary authority since 1994. It also includes Mid Glamorgan, Lothian, &c. which were established in 1972-3 and devolved in 1994-6. 1972 was when the districts of Northern Ireland were established, and the map shows counties – so is the previously posted map outdated by half a century? But there was no point in which the changes wrought by the Local Government Acts of both Scotland and Wales were in effect, but those of earlier Northern Ireland were not.

The only conclusion I can draw from this is that not only is the previous map nearly 50 years (and many Acts) old, but also an incorrect version – that has somehow survived in such a capacity that it is even used as a template in autism threads on /int/. Even so, that doesn't explain why other maps with current divisions, like the one I posted, still depict the old Irish counties.

So no, it's not that Americans are incapable of understanding how borders work, but thanks for trying.

Generally I cannot consider anything with an attendance above 5% rare.

I see Mauritius a lot, which might contribute to why I don't say it's very uncommon.
>>
>>57662361
6% really isn't the definition of a lot.

>>57662668
It's more complex than you think. The attendance is based on /int/, /pol/, and /sp/.

Do you see Trinidad and Tobago a lot? Or Suriname?

Think about it.

Not only that, attendance is based on ALL active posts.

I only browse posts in the catalog that catch my eye. So you have to take distribution into account.

Mass is a completely different issue, as it is based on a fixed measurement of one physical property that can only be looked at from one perspective.

That's a heavily inaccurate chart. There are obtainable flags beneath Western Sahara.

Refer to the 'attendance' column of whatisthisimnotgoodwithcomputers.com/#/flaghunter for a more objective viewpoint.

Then that's what I will say with Mauritius, and other flags such as Uzbekistan. I've seen them plenty from what I remember, and that makes up the subjective portion of what I consider rare.

>it doesn't support thinking 6% is a lot at all.
What one person considers "a lot" is purely arbitrary. You can't impose upper and lower limits on every such term.

I've always had my own opinions on what percentage should constitute rarity, and throughout the six or seven months I've been collecting it's narrowed down a lot. Now I barely consider anything rare, especially since I've seen many uncommon flags here posting on KC and Yli.
>>
>>57662958
Besides that- >it doesn't support thinking 6% is a lot at all
I did not say 6% is a lot. 6% would be moderately infrequent in regular cases, but that's why I said you have to take distribution into account. Not only that, there's browsing time, and the times at which a certain flag is most active.
>>
>>57662958
>Then that's what I will say with Mauritius, and other flags such as Uzbekistan. I've seen them plenty from what I remember, and that makes up the subjective portion of what I consider rare.
you are comparing 90% with 6%.

>What one person considers "a lot" is purely arbitrary
not it's not. there limits. you can't say rare when speaking about 90% and neither a lot when speaking about 6%.

I will very confidently say that I see Uzbekistan more than I see Trinidad and Tobago. I do not remember seeing that red-black-red flag at all for the past one or two months, while I have seen Uzbekistan maybe once every week.
You can throw your numerals at me, but does that change my memory?

>not it's not. there limits. you can't say rare when speaking about 90% and neither a lot when speaking about 6%.
I've seen idiots crying "rare" at Moldova and the USVI.
In the meantime, I do not see New Caledonia, for example, as rare.

It depends on your definition. I'm seen as the one wanker who's obsessed with international trivia but do I face any problems? No.

Which is why I consider it odd when someone says he's considered weird when he's tidying up his flag collection. There's a culture of academic elitism here and it's not seen as weird or bad at all.

That depends on what topic it is. See my screencap as an example - what if your topic is something like abstract art? Or how good a food tastes?

>that terms aren't purely abritrary at all.
The limits are.

>if you don't want to ignore previous statements, then there is no other option than replying to the same topic.

>thanks for confirming you don't read the full post.
I did and I find nothing wrong in what I'm saying. You don't see Tuvalu a lot, but if you only browse threads in which Tuvalu posts, and not the USA, you'd say Tuvalu is more common without the statistics to back you up.

>it isn't.
What I'm saying is that it's a spectrum. Not everything is fully subjective, nor fully objective. When it comes to saying something is rare, the word "rare" has no well-defined and agreed-to upper limit. A beginner might consider it to be 50%. A complete grasshopper might say it's 85%. And that's only the objective part of the mental equation.

>you are completely, totally and without a doubt right. there is absoutely no error in your thought and it's not possible to contradict it at all.
>
>and i'm not even being sarcastic.
I'll take that last statement with a pinch of salt- but if you say so.
But if you really are sarcastic- and very much so- please find me an internationally drafted paper that states what the fixed limits, in percentages or figures, of the phrase "a lot" are.

>>unrelated to each other.
>>topic1: is it rare?
>>topic2: is it rare?
I was referring to the statements I was making. They pointed to the SAME topic, as I stated, but they were meant to be unrelated - one about the objective part of the "rarity" issue, and one about its subjective part.
>>
>>57663998
>without the statistics to back you up.
that's right, without being able to back it up.

>A beginner might consider it to be 50%. A complete grasshopper might say it's 85%.
he might say it, and he would be wrong.
>try telling a judge, you will pay your money fine at once, but then do it in 3 month or whenever.
you can replace anyone and anything with judge and money fine.

>But if you really are sarcastic
no i wasn't. i just applied your thinking that no words has limits, which is like you see a doubtful mentality.

>one about the objective part
>>Generally I cannot consider
>>I see Mauritius a lot, which might contribute to why I don't say it's very uncommon.
there is no objective part.
>>
>>57664534
>that's right, without being able to back it up.
But there's no need to. The statistics, in my opinion, only constitute half of how someone would determine whether a flag is rare.

>he might say it, and he would be wrong.
And you would be right?
Who determines who's right? Are you the supreme being of knowledge in this field?

>you can replace anyone and anything with judge and money fine.
I doubt the problem here is the concept, it's your English, which was what I was saying way back when I said I don't understand what you mean.

>i just applied your thinking that no words has limits, which is like you see a doubtful mentality.
Alright then. What I was saying is that you can't say what you think is "a lot" without people saying that's wrong. Different people have different definitions.

>there is no objective part.
Because I wasn't referring to it? The problem with the objective part here is that determining when the statistic is low enough to render a flag "uncommon" or "rare" is subjective in its own right. Which effectively makes the entire process merely pseudo-objective, despite it being fundamentally rooted in numeral percentages.
>>
>>57664720
>The statistics, in my opinion, only constitute half of how someone would determine whether a flag is rare
before i continue:
are you 100% sure about this?
>>
>>57664827
>are you 100% sure about this?
Yes, and that's my personal opinion as I said. If your opinion is that you should purely use time-dependent percentages to determine how rare a flag is in your book, you're free to go ahead.
>>
>>57649525
>Even so, that doesn't explain why other maps with current divisions, like the one I posted, still depict the old Irish counties.

I did it that way due to what flags are available and what people will actually use. If there are flags made for Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon District Council etc. then perhaps I'll redraw Northern Ireland. Or you could do it yourself.
>>
>>57664883
that's plain stupid.
instead of letting fact influence your opinion, you want your opinion to influence facts.

if you think that's a mentality worth to discuss you are wrong (hint, this is not a opinion).

i'll stop replying now.
>>
>>57665086
>i'll stop replying now.
I've seen the >i'll stop replying now. part but I'll just conclude by saying that the flaghunter website isn't rooted in rock-solid facts, as the statistics are time-dependent.

And in addition, the word "rare" is subjective as well, as there is no authoritarian limit to what determines rarity. Besides that, no one's said the concept of rarity is purely objective, as we've discussed (and I believe you've said so yourself) in previous posts.
>hint, this is not a opinion
But it clearly is! Whether something is worth discussing is obviously subject to opinion. You're demonstrating you don't understand what an opinion is.

But you're not going to read this, so ta-ta anyway.
