Well, I've read up on liberation theology and its ties to communism, or marxism in general. On the Jesuits not so much. I just couldn't connect the dots. And I only saw the vatican from the outside, highly filtered through the image of our press - which is mostly left itself - so I thought he'd be just the new Pope and there would be no way the cardinals would actually let someone who is a liberation theologian by heart become the Pope. And if the press has written anything critical, it was that he needs to be even more tolerant and worldly and fit the agenda of the left and how Noam Chomsky likes him.
But the west is weak, old and demoralized. I can't see much power of resistance left in the general population. Same goes for Christianity. Most are only Christians on paper or atheists.
