Art Products Thread / Consumer Whore Thread

I just made this thread to ask what kind of sketchbook should I get. And to share what kind of tools you guys use I guess

I was thinking about this,
http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Sketchbook-Pocket-Classic-Notebooks/dp/8883701054?ie=UTF8&keywords=pocket%20sketchbook&qid=1465415785&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2

is moleskin good for pencil?

I prefer spiral card-back, so I can fold the book down to the size of single page. Also prevents crinkling.

But I hear people like moleskin, try it for yourself.

I prefer using a clipboard with a cover and filling it with printer paper. i discard the trash as needed and archive the really nice stuff (i don't have any) in plastic wallets. Using a clipboard is great because the paper lies flat, and is dirt cheap to set up.

Has the west fallen so low that Japan is taking over?
42 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>

Yes.

Ain't that fucking obvious? Have you seen ANY good and well known western animation in the last fucking decade?
>>
>>2550178
Anyone can tell that 2d animation has largely died in the West. 3d has taken over for feature films, and the 2d animated shows are either for kids or are comedy shows, neither of which demand high quality and both of which have shoestring budgets. France has some good animators left, but the US has really gone downhill like crazy.

Japan is the largest center of 2d animation in the world so it's not a surprise they are influential and producing high quality work.
>>
>>2550183
The first season of Legend of Korra was pretty stellar purely from a technical animation standpoint. But yeah, as far as tv shows go, the west is hopelessly behind japan both in terms of animation quality and story telling.

What makes you want to draw till you puke blood? Anything goes, youtube channels, movies whatever.

Pic related, recently seen this, they adapted the manga in a quasi asano-esque bitter(((sweet))) way, and the sountrack is great to work on.

... and this.

They're not art related but they always remind me that you have to work hard to get where you want to be.
>>
If any tard here tries to say Whiplash I'll slap you. The point of the movie is that it's a terrible approach to art.

>>2553220
The made Bakuman into a live action film??? And it was okay? I read the comic a few years ago and thought it was pretty good.

Arakimentari is fun. It's not the most inspirational in the sense you are looking for, but if you like his photography it's interesting to see, and his enthusiasm towards photography really makes you feel more energized about art and creation in general.

How do your parents feel about you becoming an artist?
170 posts and 25 images submitted.
>>
They're supportive and my mom sometimes asks me to draw things (and she frames them which is embarrassing because I'm not that good), but since it's a hobby I don't think they're that concerned about it affecting my future wellbeing.
>>
I have my own house, why the fuck they would care about that?
>>
They're super supportive

Since they both went to art center I feel like I have giant shoes to fill. But whenever i procrastinate or put off making any art whatsoever, I tend to feel a bit of guilt that I'm wasting their money and time.

Hey guys, I really need some help. So I'm going into my senior year of college, supposed to be graduating in winter with a BFA and I don't know what to do. I'm doing a dual concentration in drawing and maybe electronic media. Would that be a worthwhile degree? I can already use photoshop and could probably find classes online. So, do you guys find graphic design education in college helpful? What classes would be the most helpful, e.g. typography, design etc.?

TL;DR what are the most helpful courses to take in art school?
4 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
OP here again, I don't know about you guys, but the school I went to has the worst staff imaginable and I feel like I've wasted my education on bad classes with even worse professors. So angry. Fuck art school. I feel like I should've just gone to specs howard and would've been more prepared.

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Hey so I've been posting this on the question thread but got no reply,so I have trouble understanding the the cause of the purple in the shadow formed in the yellow/afternoon light in pic related, is it introduced as a complementary to yellow or blue in the sky mixing with red?

Fuck man instead of posting something from a fucking cartoon why wont you post something found in life?

Animated CGI movies are actually a far better source to study realistic lighting than photos are. Photos can't even come close of capturinge the vibrance of real life lighting and often times the photographer fucks with color balance of an image to fake it.

Meanwhile color key artists working for Disney and co usually have years, sometimes decades of plein air painting experience and carefully design every shot, using real life reference AND knowledge about how colors are actually seen by the human eye, not a photo camera.

I personally have been heavily considering getting a tattoo of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which of course is an important factor in happiness, sleep, mood, and may be one of the more diverse and important chemicals in your body. I wanted to get it on my shoulder or upper back that has different colors or something for the bond to represent family members and close friends, the colors being all their favorite colors, but in my head i see it looking pretty silly. Any ideas?
