Mmmmm I didn't liked those, looks confusing compared to the last pages

Hey, guys, I'm looking for a comprehensive composition book.I read Framed ink but maybe I'm retarded because I don't quite get it.It's catered obviously towards sequential art so what I'm looking for is something that's more character/story oriented illustration pieces.Old master studies can do just so much for me and without the proper knowledge to back it up Im just resorting to contrast and shapes.Needless to say I have no idea how to frame a character in a piece and how to apply proper story elements.

Messing around with oil paints for the first time.
I usually just draw with a pencil.
Any comments would be much appreciated on how to make it better.

Try drawing trees, specifically happy trees
>>
>>2347726

Well, when you will be drawing backgrounds, remember that you have composition centred on the opium head, so it should draw to it.

I want to get into acrylics. Should I do Bill Perkins and Huston from NMA or is there a good alternative?

Bear in mind that I want to learn how to get the right color by mixing ultramarine blue, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, titanium white and ivory black.

I understand color theory but somehow when I paint the colors don't behave as I want them to.

Any help?

Pick up any color theory book and you are done
But in my experience you need a good selection of picments or your paintings will look like a photo without flash
>>
>>2346463

Try Gurney's Color and Light book. It's basically the best color theory book you'll get your hands on, because it goes beyond the RBY color wheel. It covers how paint and pigments behave which is something a lot of people don't ever discuss.

Also, all your colors will be darker when they are dried, and you will never get a color bright then the one straight from the tube.
You will also not be able to do all color mixes without a warm/cool of each color. White will cool colors, Ivory black will also cool them, whereas Mars black is a warm black and will warm colors. Using black on your colors, in addition, will generally dull them instead of making a richer black(think mixing darker colors, such as a burnt seinna and ultramarine blue/prussian blue).

This doesn't even get into tinting strengths, but I'm rambled on enough already. Get Gurney's book, and also make a sheet of paper where you test colors swatches, tints, mixtures, and document them so you can more easily replicate colors. I'd also recommend starting with cheaper student acrylics such as dickblick's brand.

>says understands color theory
>goes on to admit he can't control the output of the colors.

Learn more color theory in analog art. There's more there than you think.

I'm drawing as a hobby now. I've given up on the fantasy and sci-fi garbage, or trying to be a concept artist a while ago. That shit is just plain droll.

I'd really like to one day (maybe in a couple decades) be as good as the old masters. What do you think of studying beyond the basics for that path?

what do you consider a master?
do you think being a 'master' in the contemporary world necessitates the same skillset as your early 19th century friend here?
>>
>>2345986

well, seeing as he was literally called "drawing master" by the Queen of England at the time, I'd say it probably does
>>
>>2345991

>at the time
i think you missed my point
i was wondering if you think having the same skillset as, say, Byron, means the same thing in contemporary culture. If one would want to be a master one would, presumably, want to further the boundaries and possibilities of his own medium, which is a desire with far different implications in the 21st century than in the 19th century.

However, I'm reading your post again and it sounds like you just want to paint like a 19th century painter.

/ic/ please red pill me on Van Gogh.

Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/4YDuzW77 (needs updated)

working on update, New parts came in sooner than i anticipated and more or less cased full apathy to do anything, which caused me to delay installing them... yea i know, kind of defeats the purpose... should get them in tonight, and probably work on some more shit to bin based off of last thread, likely going to revise a section or two to better workings.

if people know what the "needs update" specifically means, be my guest to post something that needs to be added, minor grammar corrections are already happening.

with that said, the ass end of the prior thread will be answered here.

check the options menus, it may just be a text option but most painting programs have multiple brush display types... but sai is japanese if i remember right... you may be shit out of luck because of the retarded ways they tend to make programs.

>>2337443
look up the watts 7-8gb video, this will give you a new found appreciation and much needed new perspective for pencil work.
>>2337464
you got any fucking clue how expensive painting is? how fast that shit adds up? there is a reason you start with charcoal/pencils and once you understand values you move on to color.

>>2337498
depends on the person, but usually

dicking around,
fucking with forms
seeing if shit works better this way or that way
than it branches off here on what their end goal is, if its painting they lay in color, if its something with an outline they clean up the line work

from there its usualy base colors and if those are good, the reflected light, shadows, than highlights.

it also depends on how the style, some can forgo alot of work some require autism levels of dedication

>>2338015
>>2337606
not a fucking chance in hell did he use copics, both works predate the product line/company even starting.

>>2337531

for the akira... look at the shadows, wheels, pants, gun, this is watercolor, though just based on how smooth come of the colors are, possibly something else could have been used too.

water colors+gouache use to be the standard for what was used in illustration...

as for memories, i could not tell you, not sure what was popular mediums to use in japan, im honestly getting nothing from the low resolution one you posted and google searches.
>>
>>2337712

painting is easier, the hard part of getting better is knowing colors and value, both of them are a bitch in their own right, but both have a clear way to understand them, while drawing tends to be far more difficult due to the copious amounts of methods and various ways to learn or teach it... i think i need an example...

when you paint something, and im thinking real life. you typically have a reference in front of you, and if you know how to make a color, 90% of all difficulty is now gone from transferring that scene to a piece of paper.

contrast that wil drawing, where you don't get mediums that play well with blocking in and refining areas, you have to know how the human body works, whereas with a painting not so much.

god damn this is hard for me to really explain...

here, watch bob ross, he may not be the best, but he effectively took all the color combining bullshit out of the equation and showed you painting was fairly easy, and even people who never painted could match the results if they followed the steps.

i cant think of a single drawer who could do the same, sure some kids shows did teach perspective and laying in shapes, but the results were never quite like what you could get with painting.

you want to talk about the pinical of each... i would still argue painting is easier just due to the mediums you use, the fact a canvas can dry and you don't have to worry about a smudge anymore, contrast that with graphite or charcoal.
if you fuck up, you can always remove medium (depending on the medium) or paint over the area and get a fiarly good if not un noticeable result, with a drawing the moment you erace, you change how the medium will stick to what you are drawing on, possibly fucking an entire work... also painting you can touch the canvas and the worst that will happen is you need to touch up that area again, with drawing your oil is now on the paper and that spot now just became your new nightmare to work with.

i believe its shit on windows, so many windows users report problems that make the program unusable.

>>2338080
cant say, it just be because of how your eyes focus on one thing than another back and forth often, it could be the lighting, there are so many factors that could be giving you a headache.

let him throw a bitch fit over it, if he really takes you to court i doubt shit would happen unless you made money off the work.

The usual treament is to go around telling others how to draw and fix thier shit. This can be done in several ways.

1. Make a subrebbit to teach lesser artists and then spam the rest of rebbit with it

2. Cry on faceback for attention and then talk shit on 4chan preaching the "fundamentals"

3. Dedicate a full day to doing Deviantar personal critiques of under-age artists' work.

The point is to get back on the horse and contine on believing you're worth the effort to pay attention to no matter how annoying you really are.

Wanted to post in the questions thread but couldn't find it.

Did you or do you have trouble staying focused on drawing so that you have resorted to using "focus drugs"?
>>I notice since I started my full time nightshift job I don't ever feel like I have spare time; this makes me feel rushed when sitting down with a pencil- like I HAVE to make each effort perfect. It usually ends in me giving up.

I have all these things I use to stay up on the night shift. Caffeine, ephedrine, adrafinil, and now kratom which I use occasionally at work
I'm just wondering if any of these have helped you become a more focused or better artist, and, if so, were there negative consequences?
thanks

The only thing you should need to focus on art is a good daily routine, time management, self discipline, sleeping correctly, and a healthy diet. Daily low-bar fitness is also a must. Even if you just set the bar as low as 5 minutes of fitness.

If you don't have these, or if your work is burning out, your attempts at art will fail to prosper.
This is irrelevant of whether you are doing day shift or night shift. There's no reason to not simply be sleeping correctly between shifts, and then using your spare time/days off appropriately.

Drugs don't do shit. They're just another thing you have to waste time dealing with once you get stuck relying on them for a routine fix.

Fucking fresh fruit and almond nuts are way better than any bullshit drugs.
