So I was reading some backstory on The Loners mini-series by CB Cebulski where Mattie Franklin was one of the main characters. It featured a follow-up to the events of "Alias" where she got revenge on the dudes that used her as a MGH source and date raped her. Many people considered Mattie's characterization there to have redeemed her from the awful reboot in the spider-books back in the day.
Apparently editoral at Marvel liked the book and other creators wanted to use the characters from that story. As evident by Phil Urich and Darkhawk's later exposure....

DC really dropped the ball by not making black Power Girl just Power Girl from an alternate dimension where she's black. She's always had the proportions of a black woman anyways.
