But I'm in the same boat with a Finance degree at 23. Gotta just try the temp agencies. I hate those fuckers, you can go to 15 of them and only hear from 1 of them ever again. Not really, both.
It can be kind of safe through technical analysis or trend riding/news surfing but nigga it just ain't worth it in the long run IMO, it's true that you can make an insane ammount of money in one day but in just one turn you can lose everything. It's an all or nothing situation, big risk and big wins and it is the closest thing to 'betting' in the stock market.

No. COBOL and FORTRAN are incredibly outdated and perl is a mess. It would surprise me if people used perl in the world of finance.
I'm not sure what you mean by "computational finance," but for analysis Python would probably be the best language to use.

Python is the best language for analysis, and one of the easiest ones to learn. Once you're pretty comfortable in it, torrent data science programs from udemy.
Data analysts are heavily in demand right now.
You would be suprised that quite a lot of Inv banks still use Perl. The front end systems are all cutting edge, but a lot of the back office stuff still uses Perl.
Also agree that Python is a good choice.
