How do you know what Martial Art is best for you?
Been doing boxing (Western kind) in a shitty gym, quit 6 months into it, but I'm still drawn to martial arts/ combat sports, but hesitating between a lot of them. How are you supposed to make a choice? What made YOU start practicing the MA/Combat sport you practice?
>>733345
>What made YOU start practicing the MA/Combat sport you practice?
It was in my price range, location, and the instructors were not totally full of shit, plus it actually had sparing was not profit driven.
>>733345
I decided that picking martial arts that actually work in fights was best for me.
Many people do not choose this.
>>733345
I've always loved Kung Fu, and for most of fifteen years i've done some version or another of it, but the reasons I gave myself changed a lot.
When I was in my mid teens I was fascinated by the movies and legends surrounding the art. It seemed like the ultimate thing to invest in, just develop this amazing physical and mental power and conquer all of the inadequacies I had at the time.
Late teenage years and early twenties it was about fighting. I thought the world consisted of the strong and the weak, and that I wanted to be one of the strong. I looked down on 'sport' fighters, or those that didn't train 'real' kung fu. It was a pretty unhappy stage really. I started cross training in other arts to learn how to beat them.
In my mid twenties I realised that the chinese obsession with perfect technique and never using strength or muscle was working againt me. I began lifting weights, and started working as a bouncer in a low income area. Started trying to integrate more judo, and basically moving towards an MMA mindset.
By my late twenties, i'd been in plenty of 'streetfights', and my skills, although pretty average overall, had been more than adequate for the situations I was in. I realised that this big monster of 'violence' that I'd been preparing for was just a bunch of mentally ill people projecting their issues at each other. If I became one of those mentally ill people, I would eventually get damaged no matter how good I was, but if I was a good communicator and had sound instincts on when to involve backup/police then it became a far less dire problem.
These days Kung Fu is my art, like painting or music. It adds colour to my life. I do take parts of it and tailor them to very specific goals, and crosstrain, spar and pressure test those elements. But those aren't the whole of my training just like violence isn't the whole of my life. Martial arts is healthy, it's social, and I enjoy doing it.
>I don't love this anymore
Tyson said that when he was 24 years old
I'm 25 and I've also lost my desire for the fight
Most pro fighters stop going for knockouts and reduce training intensity after age 22
When will you lose your lust for violence? Or when do you think you will lose it?
The Rage will always remain..
"Some Men Just Want to Watch the World Burn"
Fighting is equivalent for living here.

When I was 24 years old, my body shut down. I went from training, to being confined to a bed.
Without exaggeration, I honestly expected to just eventually die from my ailment.
And laying in my bed, facing my own mortality, I realized my greatest regret was not knocking more motherfuckers out.
That's eery. I'm 26 and had my last muay thai fight at the end of 2013, after that I let my training peter off to nothing over the following few months and focused on powerlifting instead.
Over the last couple of months I've really missed fighting and teaching and have joined a new MMA gym after having moved city. Now I train BJJ and am looking at getting back into practicing and teaching muay thai, I want to go back to Thailand and have another fight because it's something I want to achieve, but I definitely don't think I have the same fire I once did.

Why does /asp/ recommend Kyokushin karate as a good striking style when it doesn't even train for punches to the head? What does it have that Muay Thai doesn't?
Also, discuss striking styles
>>734359
>What does it have that muay thai doesn't
Honor
>>734359
>What does it have that Muay Thai doesn't?
Belts, uniforms, Japanese terminology. A bigger variety of techniques.
You'll find many schools DO train for punches to the head, but honestly not as well as Muay Thai.
You'll probably end up a little better able to take hits to the body from Kyokushin, but not substantially so. Conditioning will probably be better from MT, so that's a wash.
They're not THAT different, but if the cultural trappings of KK appeal to you more than those of MT, you're going to look forward to training more and end up getting more out of it.
>>734364
Kyo trains for self defense and with self improvement as the first and foremost goal
In muay thai you train to win matches as the first an foremost goal
Before you can go into technical details you have to look at the overall destination of each art/sport.

Are pennyboards for kids? Im interested in one but never seen anyone who looks over 13 to use one so is it just a toy?
Hey /asp/ I'm hoping maybe you can give me some guidance.
I'm a big fan of super-heroes and fictionalized martial arts, and I'd really like to "get into" that sort of thing.
But I'm not sure what I should do.
I know that I want to be able to defend myself well, and also deal some damage, move quickly, and be agile.
So it would seem parkour is what I need to learn, right?
What else?
A martial art seems like something else I should develop, but I don't know which one(s) or how to choose.
I don't wanna get super buff or anything, my body is already on the masculine side, and I don't wanna look manly/unattractive.
As an aside, i should mention that I'm not completely, out of shape, I'm 6'0" and I weigh about 160 right now (working on losing some weight; my "goal" is 145, but I don't know how reasonable that is in practice)
I bicycle often, but I don't have super thighs.
I'm a woman, in case that was unclear
>So it would seem parkour is what I need to learn, right?
I don't think so. Parkour would help you navigate a terrain but it very rarely focuses on any sort of combat.
>>652400
right, I know that, I guess I left out the "I want to be able to move around well and not hurt myself" bit.
...idk, Spider-Man type shit, basically.
pic unrelated.
So in less than a year, I plan on becoming a vagrant and traveling the world with nothing but my backpack. While I do this, I will obviously not be able to attend regular martial arts classes, but I do want to continue to train and grow as a martial artist.
My question is, what would be the best way to do that? I figure I'd be able to enter amateur fights every once and a while to maintain my skills, but how can I continue learn more?
>>652554
see you diseased, malnourished, and dead within a few years.
>>652556
Yeah, probably.
So do you have an answer to my question?
>>652557
how can you grow when you're dead idiot
Boxers can break your neck , knock you out, smash your skull, or crack your ribs with just one punch.
BJJ is a shit tier martial art for realistic self defense. First of all 90% of street fights happen with multiple aggressors. You do not want to be hugging a guy on the floor, whilst his friend stomps your head.
You want to stay on your feet and move around, always being aware of surroundings.
Fights happen on concrete, Which is a bad place to be rolling around on the floor with someone.
Choking out a lone aggressor would be attempted murder. Breaking someones arm would be grievous bodily harm. Knocking someone out would count as self defense.
Only with very strict rules (e.g no pinching or biting) and competition like environment is BJJ ever a useful "martial art" .

In conclusion : BJJ is useless art form, that only works in an unrealistic and contrived sports environment.
If you train BJJ for anything other than competing in professional MMA you are wasting both money and time.
