The bosses are also made up of phases, Morton doesn't bring out the Fire Mallet until he took enough damage. The guy playing it messed up and it meant he had to fight two more Shyguys and knocking away the pedestal again.
So you have to progress through the battle before you can counter the bosses with their weakness.
Why do people claim this game is incomplete and doesn't have an ending when it ends at least three times? Plus the secret tapes resolve every single plot point, not just for this game but for the entire series. In fact, the Zero conversations are more concise and clear about the series' conceptual background than any other exchange and rant in the later games. I honestly thing The Phantom Pain tidied up the series storyline and it was overall well designed.

I love how the game's story is structured like a television series, and then gets these extra epilogues in the end. Kingdom of the Flies wouldn't have been great, but it isn't all that essential.

Because maining a character in a fighting game means alot. You'll likely spend hundreds if not thousands of hours focusing on that character, so being distinguishable and pleasing to the eye is a much bigger factor.

SKL- your chance to hit and dodge attacks
SPD- if your SPD is high enough, you'll be able to double-attack enemies.
LUK-affects accuracy and avoidability
DEF-affects defense against physical attacks
RES-affects defense against magical attacks
CON- unit's weight. this affects who they can rescue or be rescued by, and if your CON is too low, you will suffer SPD penalties while using heavier weapons.
