Play FE7 ("Fire Emblem" in NA) first, it's the best starting point for the series.
The stats are all pretty self explanatory except for the ones involving rescues and weapon weight, but they're not that hard to figure out and the game has a built in guide book.
To simplify supports: every character has potential supports with certain other characters, for example Eliwood and Hector (two main characters in 7), and you build that support level by keeping the characters within 3 tiles of each other; the closer they are, the faster that support will build. I don't remember if battling side by side affects support or not, but with each support level (C/B/A) you get a little bit of support dialog as well as some stat bonuses when those two characters battle near each other. Having A rank supports gives the best bonuses, and having A rank supports between the main lords and certain characters can give you one of a couple of different endings.
tl;dr - Keep certain characters close together, when you start ranking up support levels keep them close for the attack bonuses.You can also farm support ranks by standing around on maps with no turn limit, but they only level up once per map.
