If you're talking about the game itself, then what went wrong is that Nintendo pandered to the kids who thought Wind Waker was for babies and tried to be grim and edgy. The result is undeniably one of the least imaginative and soulless Zeldas.

For a supposedly grimdark Zelda game, it's pretty fucking ridiculous though. It's got that weird chicken thing, that weird shop with the annoying music, fucking sumo wrestling and other stuff.
Maybe Nintendo didn't want to commit to full grimdark like Shadow the Hedgehog but I feel like it was just an aesthetic choice and not them trying to be grimdark at all.

Let me tell you a story about my mother.
She's only played Skyrim for the past two years. Like, it's literally the only game she knows at this point. And I only have myself to blame because it was me who suggested her to play it.
Anyway, last time I glanced at what she was doing she was laying the controller on the stand, unpaused, while thirty agro enemies were attacking her.

I've been trying to get her to play other games. Literally, I brainstorm as many games as I can to stop her addiction to Skyrim. I tried to get her to play Final Fantasy, Fallout 3, new vegas, or 4. I even suggested her to play Oblivion or Morrowind. Problem is, she only plays games with gamepad support, and only on the PC.
Last ditch effort, I think of another super casual game. I buy Undertale for her.

SMash is better of course but I had fun playing this with my bros
It did the best it could without resorting to be a straight clone. Some of the characters play amazing like the killzone guy his moveset should be in smash its fluid. Others are very annoying but I'm assuming it's because I suck as those characters.
In the end it's definitely worth picking up as a game. Mainly for playing with bros in local couch co op. Other wise prob not much reason to pick it up. Although I didn't have much time to mess around with it.
