I took his wording 'huge swing' to mean what you referred to as the 'spin'. Not I don't know who means what. But I agree, sidestep (if you can call the slight movement needed a sidestep) the single downward crushing ball swings and block the spinning ball swings.

Front Mission 3, had the itch and pulled it down via emulator.
I think it's still an amazing turn-based game with branching storylines and missions that blows a lot of similar modern games out of the water, and proves the Japanese industry has regressed over time.
