Just finished the Revelations route. Conquest and Revelations' story made me want to kill myself out of all its contrivances, but gameplay's the best it's ever been in the series.
Also the cast really lacked the vibrant magnetism of its immediate predecessor's. I remember being all excited to see how Awakening's supports would play out, how these characters would play out and what kind of kids they'd have.
Now it feels dry and utilitarian, like Pokemon husbandry. "Shiro is always a beast, Soleil's got retard lesbo strength," etc.
I do like the characters a lot, they're still oozing with personality in everything they do, especially with the more detailed animations, but it still feels disappointing, even with the base gameplay expanding on Awakening's robust customization and support systems.
Also despite being on all the packaging, the royals are disappointingly barely relevant in their routes. They show up, do a song and dance, then end up as (albeit powerful and useful) roster filler like every other unimportant Fire Emblem character in all the other titles, even the eldest princes who still weirdly defer to Corrin for inane reasons despite being in charge of most of their army, and their country in Ryoma's case, to say nothing of Xander, Ryoma, Leo and Takumi all being vaunted strategists and tacticians and still Corrin mostly consults Azura in every route.
Corrin and Azura desperately needed a Chrom to their Robin and Lucina, especially in the non-Birthright routes, to play the assertive and emotional humanist, instead of Corrin trying to play whatever would be convenient and Azura slapping them back into "productive' mode depending on what was happening in the story, then going back to infodumping and playing plot key.

I agree. Birthright was charming in being "standard Fire Emblem story but in Japan," and Conquest's gameplay at least kept me going, but I had to put a few days between chapters when it came to Revelations, even if I did enjoy some of the wackier gimmicks the maps got up to.

Anyone who wants to return the game is a fucking fool who deserves to lose the money. The game is what it is and whether or not you like the gameplay it's made well with a high level of polish. Everything about the game you knew already from the Beta or just by looking at footage of it and none of the core mechanics were going to change.
