I want to use one to play emulated N64 games, or should I get an actual N64 controller?
A USB N64 controller seems like the most obvious choice. Haven't used one myself though.
I think there are USB versions of NES, and SNES controllers too.
But imo, between those two, I'd play with a PS4 controller or a PS3 controller that emulates an Xbox controller. Or get a cheap Rock Candy USB XBox360 controller.

Devs won't bother to optimize for the older versions of consoles, you should just buy the new one :^)
I highly doubt yearly upgrades would be worth the R&R. It'll be once every 3-5 years. And I doubt there will be more than one major revision every generation either. Like it'll go X console -> X console slim (just a hardware revision, exact same performance/software) -> X console.5 (supports better graphics, but all games have to be backwards compatible) (possible released at the same time as the slim version with the slim version being kept around as a budget option) -> X console.5 slim (end of life for this generation, will be kept around for a few years like the last 360 and PS3 revision as a super budget option).

Or they could, you know, put out a console that doesn't suck and actually advertise it. That's also a feasible option.
Nintendo would be a dramatically different company without hardware to support. Their software staff would be downsized considerably and what remained would probably never release more experimental titles.
