Some people don't like Star Wars
Avatar was new when it came out so they didn't know if they liked it or not. It also had the "IT'S IN 3-D YOU HAVE TO SEE IT OR YOU'RE TRULY MISSING OUT! IT'S INCREDIBLE!" marketing strategy behind it.
Star Wars only had "It's just like the originals!" going for it and like I said, not everybody likes it.
Avatar had the 3D gimmick, where people thought they were going to visit another dimension so everyone had to see it
