Just watched this last night.
Loved the hell out of it, it's definitely the predecessor to Everybody Wants Some(!!), but I gotta say this movie does a lot of stuff even better.

From the title you would think that weed would be a lot more major of a focus, but it's really more about the characters, and that's just fine with me.

What really stood out for me was sort of the interplay between stories. Where Everybody Wants Some sort of stayed with the main character Jake throughout the film and used him as sort of an audience insert, you don't really get any sort of guide to this particular microcosm of high school summer life, it just sorta tosses you in and moves from story to story. I'm perfectly okay with that, since it gives you more opportunities to just sorta meander with the characters. EWS is a little more focused.

It made me kinda reflect, however, on this sort of situation and my own life, how shit like this happens to some people while I've sort of stagnated socially and emotionally. There was one character (can't quite remember his name at the moment, he was the one that got beat up by the greaser pothead), had this great speech in the car about experience, and sorta not living for the future, that shit stuck with me.

Anyway, inb4 "nice blog faggot", I just wanted to talk about it a little.

I don't really think that's true, Linklater uses Mitch and, to some extent, Pink in the same fashion he used Jake in EWS, though maybe not as overtly.

Why does this show implies that Heisenberg has some sort of talent or insight on cooking meth? His stuff always ends up being 99% clean or so, followed by Gale and late Jesse.
I mean isn't it just following a set of formulae?

As a chemist, he knows well how to maximize the reactions and how to properly use any instrumentos to receive puré meth.

Because of the complexity of high-end purification, especially super-volatile organic substances, it's more an art than a science. Masses of super-specific information and understanding have to be deployed on-the-fly depending on moisture conditions of a certain batch, pressure levels, exact equipment setup and even the weather. Remember 99-99.5% purity is better purity than the industrial chemicals it's being made from. Chemical companies tolerate a 5-7% impurity rate because it's virtually indistinguishable in massive processes that tolerate loss anyway. Whereas that extra 1% only talented chemists can achieve can blow a hardened addict's head off with higher peak metabolic densities and bl concentrations.

As someone who loved the book, I have really mixed feelings about this movie. It manages to retain, and even improve upon, the humor - but it makes really confusing narrative choices. Puck's character is the pivotal one in the novel who finally solves the whole mystery in a conversation with Doc, but in the movie Puck has a single non-expository line, so it's literally impossible to make sense of the narrative via the contents of the film alone. Maybe there'll be a directors cut that solves the issue, but then again it's Pynchon lite, so the plot doesn't really matter anyway

To put it simply, Fox loved to greenlight shows for 12 episodes. If the series was popular they'd give it a full season order but never fucking tell the creators or writers if it was renewed or not until the penultimate or even the last episode.

So most writers on their shows would write things thinking only one season would ever exist. Then in the 11th hour FOX would say yeah it's renewed leave a cliffhanger ending. So writers would scramble to make one.

After that and seeing as they've spent months creating a one season show and now have more seasons to go with, the writers are burnt out and because of the in general chaotic way network shows are written the seasons just go on and on with crazy idea after crazy one and soon the settings shift from telling the story you wanted to achieving syndication because that's what the network wants.

As a network show becomes more popular more network executives start sticking their nose in, telling the writers about targets they want hit and maybe even story points they want. So things get dragged out, things that make no sense happen, guest actors are hired to star in roles etc. Then the actors in the show also get in on this and start making their own demands, like Wentworth Miller getting fatter and refusing to put the makeup for the tattoo on anymore. This is why networks love shows where characters can be replaced at any moment by the way, it makes people easier to fire.

In the end you end up with a clusterfuck of a story that has so far been removed from what it originally was and has lost fans and viewers and pissed off actors and writers and leads to its eventual cancellation once advertisers pull their ads and put it in the new flavor of the season show.

But Fox being Fox love old properties and love reviving things if they can see some form of demand for it, so get ready for not only a 24 reboot but also a Prison Break reboot later next year.
