What's the appeal of this show?
My sister bought me the box set from Christmas and I've only just got around to watching it. I was quite hyped as the reviews are overwhelmingly good, but I found it bad, soap opera bad. A show more interested in cliffhangers, silly contrived plot, annoying catchphrases and le ebin cinematic moments that make no sense, than actual coherent, sensible character building and solid story lines.

No, sadly. It hasn't done well at the box office, and even had a decent enough marketing budget behind it.

Shane Black needs to do TV. Peak TV. Can you imagine the fucking quality television we'd get if he did a whole ten episodes like Fukunaga or Soderbergh? Or even just a pilot like Fincher? My god.
I mean, I would want to see A LOT of tits and prime skinny brunette cutie pies, it would need to be grisly, there'd need to be strong language, and it'd need to be Christmas all the time, but other than that he could do whatever he wanted, I'd be there.

This looks like that type of movie pretentious people bring up at house parties because they want everyone to know how unique their film taste is. The film has that 500 Days of Summer stigma attached to it because it's already destined to be something kids will use as a "cool" conversation ice breaker at their local art gallery meet-up. Not to mention Daniel Radcliffe is added in there as a brainless mute because Hollywood realized that if you give him more than 3 lines the only thing American audiences are going to see is Harry Potter trying to put on his best Tom Cruise impression.
