What are your thoughts about this show? I've shown it to my friends (who's taste often aligns with mine) and they all hate it. I went into the show with inexplicably low expectations but came out pleasantly surprised.

Admittedly, the humor is on the crass side. However, snappy dialogue makes the profanity mere window dressing. The jokes are a great balance of visual shock-humor, witty dialogue set in a funky 70's atmosphere. The show often uses its context for interesting social, political and emotional material and insights.

I find the family dynamic to be fresh and unlike any animiation that comes to mind. The emotional content of the show is surprisingly effective for what could be so easily pigeon-holed as cheap pandering.

The middle class drama that the main character, Frank Murphy, faces is evocative of earlier episodes of the Simpsons in a way. But rather than aim for the staccato emotional highs-and-lows that Groening's yellow folk-gave us, F is for Family delivers more consistently throughout each episode.

To explain, earlier episodes of The Simpsons (admittedly I've not watched any in a few years) felt like they set a tone of an episode and ran with it. The shows were always funny, but when heartstrings were tugged they would be pulled firmly in one direction (think of the fugu fish episode, or Bleeding Gums Murphy's story).

On the other hand, the pace of F is for Family seems farm more nuanced. The action can turn on a dime; cramming a huge amount of texture into 24 minutes. [Check the scene in Episode 5 where Billy hears his parents arguing for a perfect example of this].

Sorry for the rant/review (first post on this board is a long one) but I didn't think that I would get any replies anywhere else!

Please enlighten me what /tv/'s opinion is. I assume other people have mentioned it...but in what context?

Dr. Strangelove is objectively the greatest film ever made

Anyone who disagrees is not a lover of true cinema

Is there a name for that sort of fairytale european style of movie? The idealised aesthetic you get in films like Amelie.

Or more vaguely just recommend some good, comfy European films.
