The hobbits get back to the Shire and don't seem to be phased at all about what just happened. How can they come back and act like nothing fucking happened?! Is there something that goes into detail in the books that I"m missing?

In the books, when they come back, they have to deal wtih Saruman who established a crime network over the shire.
Frodo and Sam fades off, and Merry and Pippin become local heroes. They didn't live through anything that traumatic. Frodo and Sam, perhaps, but not M and P.
The book differs strongly in the time scale. I think they stay in Gondor for like a year after the War, or like a summer. Pippin having sworn fealty to Aragorn is called back many times throughout his life as well.
It is unknown whether or not Frodo and Sam were traumatized by their trip to Mordor, but Frodo wasn't called to Valinor just as a reward, he lost something in that quest, especially when he got stabbed by the Nazgul.

Depends if you have a stick up your ass and how far it's been shoved up there. Pacing is off, slight retcons for silver screen purposes, but over all fun flick if you're a fan of the series since you'll know what's going on.
