Game of Throne's schtick has been that it is a show that is not afraid to kill of big characters. That is not to say that that is all the show offers, but it is certainly a draw and is a big part of the show's reputation. The inevitable issue with this, though, is that as characters are killed off at a consistent rate the established cast shrinks.
The solution is to introduce new characters. But as we've seen this can be tricky and many are introduced just to be killed off in a few episodes, or are just not as compelling as the characters we've become accustomed to (Sand Snakes, Euron).
So the other solution is to just bring back dead characters. Jon Snow was a fan favorite and wouldn't have been easily replaced so he was brought back and in that sense the show gets to have its cake and eat it too; shock viewers by killing off a character they assumed was "off limits" while still keeping them on as part of the show. And Jon's not the only one. The Hound who was presumed dead came back. Beric Dondarrion was revived multiple times. The Mountain is a zombie. In the books we have Lady Stoneheart. And it's not too much of a stretch to assume that Stannis will be brought back and Arya will die a fake out death.
But doesn't this detract from the major appeals of the show? There's nothing bold about killing off characters if you just bring them back. And a show can't be taken seriously as well-written or adult if it follows the same principles as a comic book, where characters are routinely killed and revived to boost sales. How long till people get fed up?
IIRC, the book establishes that magic is returning to the world when it was previously magicless. Making things like flaming swords, resurrections, and other magical shenanigans more frequent. The fact that magic is returning is an element of the story itself.
The problem with the show is that there was no mention of magical phenomena returning to the world. It was just there and then used more often. Show-watchers will inevitably get mad that the writers are using magic frivolously to bring characters back from the dead, but book readers know that GRRM's use of magic in the story and resurrection of certain characters has always been a part of the plan.
So readers know that GRRM's world has always been high fantasy but suppressed, while viewers had no idea and believe that the seriousness of the show is being diluted due to more magic and bringing characters back from the dead.
The only reason and literally the only reason I watched this was when it started people said it was like the Sopranos and there was no real magic shit.
Now all this magic shit is back but let's face it the show went to shit long before that anyway.
The time travel was just the last straw.

We clearly see now that Ned Stark was a secondary character. It's all about Tyrion, Jon, Dany, and Arya. This show is no different once it killed all the secondary characters.
