Hey, /tg/. I didn't play tabletop RPGs until like 2 years ago, so I missed the controversy over this edition. What exactly made everybody lose their shit over this? D&D 4th edition is really fun, from what I've played. What was wrong with it that pissed so many people off?
It wasn't the previous edition and people were dead set to hate it.

“No interference this time,” one of the technicians cheers as he turns from his monitor and toward the stone obelisk at the room’s center surrounded by an elaborate technical array being tended to by numerous other men and women in jump suits or military fatigues.
“Excellent,” smiles the lead on the project as he turns to the woman standing next to him with a supernaturally obscured face, “By next week we should be able to directly interface with the dormant systems, is there anything you expect us to find?”
“Honestly I’m not sure,” she sighs, “but it will help us retake Charon and the gates,”
“Any word from the other bases as far as intel?” he asks after her carefully, “I know Neptune Base and Uranus Base are online but I haven’t heard much about your colleagues there,”
“Neither of them have checked in in three days. We expected it to take some time for them to scout out Pluto’s Planet Palace from the vacuum,” she says worriedly, “but I’m still concerned,”
The obelisk at the center of the wide and circular room glows hot white for a second. Technicians are thrown back, only she remains standing. When the light fades and everyone goes about righting themselves and knocked over equipment, the woman in white steps forward in wonder.
“What was that?” asks a technician, “Damage report?”
“Everything is intact,” one shouts, “There’s a data transmission, nothing legible yet,”
The woman pauses before an object sticking out of the floor that had not been there before. A white sword made of stone.

Quest Start
Closing the book and stacking it neatly on the side table of the quite comfortable chair, you rise and stretch your spine. While your tension is quite relieved by an exceptional amount of reading, you did still have other things to do today, even if not as the you who you are right now. There is still the matter of speaking with Nui Takeda regarding whatever it is she wanted to speak with you about, and your intentions of speaking with Tomoe-sensei at Infinity Academy.
You are normally Mikage Chiba, second year highschool student fifteen years old, formerly you were the third woman to be the magical champion of love and justice known as Sailor Moon after your mother and elder sister. Now your younger sister, Koyomi, serves as Sailor Moon; and you support her and her court of Sailor Guardians as the mysterious hero known as Eclipse.
To protect them and aid them you have your own burgeoning court of allies and supporters, but for reasons even you aren’t entirely clear on you continue to hide the truth from your younger sister that you’re the one supporting her against enemies tied to the past of your complicated family.
Presently you are in a guise, and are presently not Mikage. To cope with certain traumas, Mikage Chiba delved too deeply into using a magical disguise pen and crafted personalities to inhabit other than her own. They have taken certain independence, you have taken certain independence.
And recently, Mikage has been resolving the issues at the root of each persona and healing the wounds within herself. In the process properly reincorporating those personas into the whole of herself. Only one has made that journey so far, and another stubbornly resists the final pull, while yourself and a few of the others remain entirely unresolved.

Only two full months had come and gone after Lou Gehrig’s Gettysburg Address on July 4th. You thought that was one of the most emotionally trying days of your life, and admittedly you’ve had quite a few of them these past few years. First, it was losing your father, then it was getting estranged with your mother afterwards, then it was being absolutely crippled in combat by a debilitating wound, then it was having your first kiss robbed by the last person you ever wanted to show love to, then it was finding out Operator #5 requested the Shard being kept inside of you for “research purposes”.

You sit in your chair, by the window in your New York apartment. You were listening to the ballgame, but no longer. You simply could not focus on keeping score anymore with this weighing on your mind. Those crazy Nazis did it. They finally threw the world into war.
“Hey, don’t be so dramatic.” Sumire steps in from the kitchen, an apron around her green dress as she lazily cleans the apartment.

So what if they invade Poland?”
You gasp a little, looking at her disgustedly. “The Polish are some of the most dedicated people I know. Alongside the Chinese, the Irish, and the Negroes, they helped build this country into what it is today with nothing more than a dream and their own hands. Sumire, how would you feel if your ancestral homeland was invaded by savages who think they can bring order into the world through bigotry and fascism?”
She shrugs. “Gee. I don’t know. I guess I completely forgot about that time the West basically bullied Japan into opening its borders and then accepting new Western ideals by any means, which meant the suppression of the old Samurai and the old traditions of Japan in favor of industrialism and democracy.” You blink. “See, I can pull this stuff on you too, don’t give me your lectures on what’s right, Lady Liberty.” She pats her chest, proudly. “I know my history too!”

Welcome to The Lost Island Quest. Last thread our hero, Alan Rodain, delved into a ruined temple dedicated to the worship of dragons. After killing some giant frogs, finding some unique magic items and blinding a crocodile, he and his companions stumbled into the temple of a lizardfolk tribe worshiping The First Dragon. Alan was able to negotiate a potential peace treaty between these natives and the city of Seaside where he agreed to swap one of his crew for one of their tribesmen temporarily. Now, with the lizardman Ssett in tow, Alan heads back to Seaside with his friends.

You come back up through the temple, speaking with Ssett most of the distance. He seems to be a very inquisitive individual. As you start describing to him exactly what characteristics he can observe to determine which of you are male and which of you are female, you reach the room where you left Quissonce.
She spots you all and approaches, a light in her eyes and a fire in her walk that is quickly replaced by surprise and concern as she notices your non-mammalian companion.
“What is that?” A mischievous smile crosses Gabby's face as she looks at the rest of you, before answering Quissonce.
“It's Eve. We triggered a trap that turned her into a giant lizard.” Quissonce's mouth drops open as she stares at Ssett. She tries to form sentences but can't fathom what to say. Only after a few seconds of watching Gabby barely contain her laughter does she realize she's being fucked with. You quickly explain the real situation.
“Well then, since we're on the subject of bad jokes, I've discovered the command words to start and stop the water production function of this magical relic.” You glance over to the pool and see that it has already started to drain with its source removed.
“Words?” you ask. Quissonce makes an 'ah' sound before picking up the decanter and aiming it towards the pool. She clears her throat before speaking in Draconic. (1/2)
“Piss.” Water starts to flow from the bottle into the pool. Okay, so someone with a crude sense of humor made this. Quissonce holds up a finger.
“Pussy.” The water starts to flow in greater amounts. You're pretty sure you get the joke, but Ssett sure doesn't. He looks over to you before asking what “pussy” means.
“And now for my favorite.” Quissonce says sarcastically in the human tongue.
“Blow my load.” A geyser of water explodes from the bottle and Quissonce has to brace herself to keep the thing on target. She quickly repeats the command word to stop it.
“So my current theory is that this was made by a fourteen year old. Regardless, this is a powerful magical artifact that can produces fresh, clean water at seemingly no cost.”

Very much so. Dreadnaghts are so uncool that in 2nd Ed Draeadnoghtes were called "Space Marine Wraithlords" but later they had to be called Dreddnaoughtse instead because they were nowhere near as cool as Wraithlords.

"I played a game like this once, it was a naval game with Benedict Arnold." "What I think you should do with your ship is swarm the big gunboat..."). The GM had to give him a lot of coaching on the tactics. Nevertheless, the kid did play the game and was excited about it, so that was good.

You've alerted me to the meeting of the Mages' Guild.
The ground is thick with rolling fog and the spirits of the dead rise from the ground before you. The source of the undead gathering is a wraith seemingly intelligent enough to have kept its mind intact despite its soul being twisted into an undead creation. Under its guidance the mindless patrolling undead have been alerted to your presence, but the undead are unsure what exactly to make of the massive mass of plant matter that has encircled their position.
At the same time the arrival of the merfolk leader has ended the hostility and anger being directed at you. You can tell that the aquatic army is very upset that Rufina has become a sacrifice; she was more adored than her father, not that anyone would admit that, due to her constant front line fighting. Most of the soldiers have had their lives saved by Rufina’s single minded obsession to die in battle but it seems they don’t know or perhaps don’t even care about why she was like that.
“Plant life?” The leader’s booming voice questions, “an interesting means of control.”
“Our scouts have confirmed the lord’s death in the oceans and you have proven your strength by defeating the armies that gathered here, so as agreed we will move to the place you have constructed,” he continues.
Your conversation is paused by a burst of light, a scattering of rainbows, a fancy invitation fluttering down to you, mysterious music, everyone turning red briefly and of course delicious smelling freshly bakes apple pies appearing before everyone. You look over the invitation to makes sure this isn’t some sort of prank, but all it has on it is the words ‘you are cordially invited’ and a set of coordinates in Alfheim. As you check the invitation again for some sort of trick Hestia informs you of her findings regarding the hell deed.

The deeds themselves Hestia has determined to be a mass of fractured space-time heavily infused with magic. It's actually a plot point in my setting that people have a clock out on them regardless if they change their race.
The only racial change for which this actually works is dragons, specifically the change to half-dragon.
It doesn't matter too much at this point anyways, because there's a cataclysmic event set for within the next two decades.
"Long life" is not a racial trait and similarly is not granted by polymorph. Try harder next time
