What does a good sword and sorcery hero spend all that stolen money on? "Ale and whores", but it's hard to make people feel excited about imaginary examples of those. I need concrete, specific, attractive descriptions of expensive luxuries a fantasy hero could want. Stuff the players themselves would feel excited to get the money for, even if it's not something truly "useful" like a better magical weapon. Stuff they would feel really good about their characters having obtained.

Take your gaming group camping, no cabin, no bathroom, just the wilderness and them, for 3-5 days.
Then see how happy they are to see food they don't have to catch, a warm bath and bed, and their significant others if they have any.

That aside, in sword and sorcery (as opposed to fantasy) the reward is geared towards living the good life until out of money. Creature comforts. Good food, obsequious toadies, npcs treat them with fawning adoration. Perhaps a triumph or party in their honour.

I know, but I need more specific descriptions than that. Like how D&D (or dwarf fortress) likes to meticulously detail every expensive treasure the heroes find. It makes finding it feel like more of an achievement. You didn't just get "50 GP in precious stones", you get a whole variety of beatifully cut, large, shining rubies and emeralds and sparkling diamonds and golden rings...

"Ale and whores" might be great in theory but to hear the description isn't by itself very exciting.

Im playing the new dwarf fortress and generated this world, for those who aren't quite familiar with the game, the whole west continent is goblin pits and fortresses, even the dwarven fortress has been overrun and captured.
Who wants to help me reclaim the mountains for dwarves? put in your suggestions for what kind of hero and what we're doing, starting off what name and weapon of choice.

There's nothing for you in Bitegravel, a couple of miners and farmers holed up in the snowy hills, complacent in this position across the sea.

you immediately pack up and head somewhere you can recruit more allies, after the first few hillocks it's clear the adventuring spirit has died out in these parts, you'll stick it out on your own and cross the glaciers into no-mans land

You stay at Giftcaves, the last dwarven settlement you will see for a long time, you sleep up and prepare, as you consult your map you see there is a small group of elven villages before the goblins, elves have never been kind to your people but it might be the only place to get more fighters.

It could be cool in an Inspectres kind of way. There's no "investigation", players make up stuff as they go along. It's quite fdifferent from the standard investigation paradigm though.

Nothing wrong with it.

The only issue is would be if you're trying to run a tactical swat mission or some sort of realistic police procedure Forensic investigation. In which case you're be forced to make up a lot.

How did D&D regress with its mechanics for defenses so badly?

D&D 4e defenses:
>AC (attacker rolls against static number)
>Fortitude (attacker rolls against static number)
>Reflex (attacker rolls against static number)
>Will (attacker rolls against static number)
>fairly consistent with defenses, Reflex is for anything that ignores armor but not dodging or cover, shields increase Reflex by default and let fighters and paladins lift up their shield against a dragon's breath

D&D 5e's defenses:
>AC (attacker rolls against static number)
>Strength save bonus (defender rolls against static number)
>Dexterity save bonus (defender rolls against static number)
>Constitution save bonus (defender rolls against static number)
>Intelligence save bonus (defender rolls against static number)
>Wisdom save bonus (defender rolls against static number)
>Charisma save bonus (defender rolls against static number)
>Athletics/Acrobatics (attacker and defender roll off against each other)
>completely inconsistent with defenses (Fire Bolt and Scorching Ray target AC while Fireball forces a Reflex save), save bonuses are actually different from ability check bonuses because of proficiency, Str/Int/Cha saves are rarely used, shields increase Dexterity saves only with a feat in a game with very few feat slots

Which historical (or fantasy) icon would you bring to the SW universe? (like Jedis = samurai and pod racing = chariot racing).

Think that you may have some freedom to introduce new things (example, new class/order of force users that is more or less famous) but cant replace/remove things (replace jedi with space-cataphract or whatever)

Its harder than I thought, space-vikings, space-hussars and space-ninjas would be cool but its hard to make them plausible when you can just have a regular pirate and a sith assassin or anything else that alreadys fits the role...

The Story: You are a small group of an almost extinguished species, the treants. Your Destination is the protection of nature itself and with the growing cities of humans and orcs it became more difficult to complete this task over the past years. However the greatest disaster your kind had to endure in near past was the destruction of a large amount of the "First Forest" due to orcish devastation and demonic destruction. You were forced to leave the "Tree of Life" to ensure your survival. After monts of travel (which is quite fast in the eyes of a treant) you found yourself a forest large enough to survive for an extended period of time, however you still didn´t explore it completely.

Magic: Nature Magic; mastered while in forest weak on other environement

Ressources: enough sun and water to ensure surviving

C) lets make the forest change so that if we need to we can shut down movement towards our group in moments. Basically plan to cut off all patgs at the earliest danger signs and make enemies travel through impossible terrain. Also add some design so that others would be easily lost, but we could easily defend.

My biggest issue with keeping notes is that I fail at organizing my ideas for easy access and modification.

I make a thread on /tg/, post some snippets, see what others come up with, and collect it in text files.

Images are very important to my process because I design story around handouts and make the plot fit the picture. Also images are much more efficient in reminding me of an idea and its details months later, text is just tedious for that.

Then, when I reach a point that I want to run or use it I make a PDF and post it for /tg/ to store and never use. It usually isn't ready to roll dice, but it's enough to work as seed / shotgun scenario / system agnostic adventure. There are no stats yet, but the research is done. Other times it's complete adventures.

So I have lots of folders, ordered by systems/games and events/rounds full of research, and a few PDFs (and .odt files) with the stuff I ended up actually using.

I use Evernote. Has decent organizational tools and syncs with all your devices so you can jot down notes on a phone at work, a laptop on the bus, and finish them at home

I'm going to run a game for my 11 year old nephew.

I own DnD3.5, DnD 5e, Pathfinder, Dungeon World, and 13th Age. Which of these systems would be best to teach to a kid whose rpg knowledge consists only of Skyrim? Should I use a different system?

Also, how to tailor a campaign to a single player?

Your civilization's conception is that matter is composed of four elements: Water, Air, Fire and Earth. This is incorrect.

Water is not an element: it is composed of a combination of compose of two parts element-1 and one part element-8
Air is also a composite of various elements, in the case of your world it is mostly composed of elements 7 and 8, along with a composite of two parts element-6 and one part element-8
Fire is not a substance but rather a process in which element-8 breaks down the bonds between other assemblages of elements and links with them, generating heat and light
'Earth' refers to a broad range of elements ranging from element-3 to element-92.

The blade you are carrying is primarily composed of element-26 with element-7 being the most common secondary element as well as trace amounts of various other elements.

Making a new themed ability. To go with it is Infraction, which buffs a card if it's breaking a law.
Notes- There can be multiple laws; maximum of 4 at a time per player. If a new law would be made that breaks the limit, sacrifice target card creating a law. This does not apply to casting a second copy of a card that makes a Law already in effect.
-Laws created by cards you cast do not apply to you
-Justice abilities stack, as do Infraction
-Laws can only be destroyed if the card making the Law is destroyed.
