I see mental illnesses, sources of tremendous pain and hardship for those that suffer from them and their families, used as cheap insults in minor disagreements over less-than-trivial matters. The same occurs with gender and sexual identities, things that people have fought hard for acceptance and awareness for and that innocent people continue to be tortured and murdered for today. I see people wishing one another to commit suicide, to die in any number of ways, insults over insults. Poisonous, horrendous, primitive behavior that is entirely unnecessary and - ironic or not - does more harm than any of us could ever know. This behavior is pervasive. It is found everywhere, in every language, on every forum, in every online text field.
What hope is there for any of us if, even with all our privileges, we won't be kind to each other?
