>China scrambled fighter jets on Tuesday as a U.S. navy ship sailed close to a disputed reef in the South China Sea, a patrol China denounced as an illegal threat to peace which only went to show its defense installations in the area were necessary.

>Guided missile destroyer the USS William P. Lawrence traveled within 12 nautical miles (22 km) of Chinese-occupied Fiery Cross Reef, U.S. Defense Department spokesman Bill Urban said.

>The so-called freedom of navigation operation was undertaken to "challenge excessive maritime claims" by China, Taiwan, and Vietnam which were seeking to restrict navigation rights in the South China Sea, Urban said.

>"These excessive maritime claims are inconsistent with international law as reflected in the Law of the Sea Convention in that they purport to restrict the navigation rights that the United States and all states are entitled to exercise," Urban said in an emailed statement.

>China and the United States have traded accusations of militarizing the South China Sea as China undertakes large-scale land reclamation and construction on disputed features while the United States has increased its patrols and exercises.

>Facilities on Fiery Cross Reef include a 3,000-metre (10,000-foot) runway which the United States worries China will use to press its extensive territorial claims at the expense of weaker rivals.

>China's Defence Ministry said two fighter jets were scrambled and three warships shadowed the U.S. ship, telling it to leave.

>The U.S. patrol "again proves that China's construction of defensive facilities on the relevant reefs in the Nansha Islands is completely reasonable and totally necessary", it said, usingChina's name for the Spratly Islands where much of its reclamation work is taking place.

>Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the U.S. ship illegally entered Chinese waters.

>"This action by the U.S. side threatened China's sovereignty and security interests, endangered the staff and facilities on the reef, and damaged regional peace and stability," he told a daily news briefing.

>U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry waved aside a question as to whether the U.S. aim was to send a message ahead of a visit to Asia by President Barack Obama this month.

>"This is not a pointed strategy calculated to do anything except keep a regular process of freedom of navigation operations underway," he told reporters in London.

This is why I started to hate the police.

I used to defend them as people doing a tough job, but they have arrested so many people for thought crime.

>Not enough officers to investigate a mugging
>An entire division dedicated to jailing people who use words not on the government approved list

The sad thing is they will defend their actions as "I'm only following orders".

At some point, people need to stop listening to social media for feedback. Fucking hell, the most dissatisfied people are always the most vocal.

I'm convinced this is at least partly why you see businesses tailoring their content, games, tv shows, movies etc to this madness.

Social media analytics were a mistake.

>Facebook workers routinely suppressed news stories of interest to conservative readers from the social network’s influential “trending” news section, according to a former journalist who worked on the project. This individual says that workers prevented stories about the right-wing CPAC gathering, Mitt Romney, Rand Paul, and other conservative topics from appearing in the highly-influential section, even though they were organically trending among the site’s users.

>Several former Facebook “news curators,” as they were known internally, also told Gizmodo that they were instructed to artificially “inject” selected stories into the trending news module, even if they weren’t popular enough to warrant inclusion—or in some cases weren’t trending at all. The former curators, all of whom worked as contractors, also said they were directed not to include news about Facebook itself in the trending module.

>Sarah Palin told CNN's Jake Tapper today that she believed House Speaker Paul Ryan's refusal to endorse Donald Trump once he became the presumptive Republican nominee would lead to him being "Cantored, as in Eric Cantor." She suggested Ryan's political career was over "because he has so disrespected the will of the people."

>Earlier this week, Ryan told Tapper he wasn't yet ready to endorse Trump for president, although he's said he would support the Republican nominee whoever it would be. "There's some work to be done here," Ryan said.

>Palin offered her own theory as to why Ryan, who has been critical of Trump a number of times, although not by name. "I think why Paul Ryan is doing this is because it screws his chances for the 2020 presidential bid that he's gunning for," Palin offered. "If the GOP was to win now, that wouldn't bode well for his chances in 2020 so that's what he's shooting for." Palin said she'd be open to being Trump's vice presidential nominee but knows she would likely harm more than help him.

>A Trump spokesperson said this week that Ryan, who is also going to be chair of the Republican National Convention, shouldn't be House speaker if he was unable to endorse Trump for president. In the CNN interview, Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee and former governor of Alaska, was asked if she'd support Paul Nehlan, who is challenging Ryan in the August primary. "That's a good question, seeing as I haven't even got to call him to tell him I'm supporting him," Palin responded, "but yes, I'll do whatever I can for Paul Nehlan."

>Palin said the problem with Paul Ryan and "his ilk" was that "they have become so disconnected from the people whom they are elected to represent, as evidenced by Paul Ryan's refusal to support the GOP frontrunner who we just said is our man."

>Melissa Click, the former University of Missouri assistant professor who was fired after she tried to block a student journalist from covering a campus protest, suggested in a recent interview that her public termination was a matter of “racial politics.”

>“This is all about racial politics,” she told The Chronicle of Higher Education in an interview published Sunday. “I’m a white lady. I’m an easy target.”

>Ms. Click said Missouri’s Board of Curators fired her to send a message that the university and the state wouldn’t tolerate “black people standing up to white people,” the Chronicle reported. Ms. Click didn’t elaborate on how that would explain the termination of a white woman.

>The Chronicle reported that Ms. Click’s “nerves are perpetually on edge” since her firing in February, “when she began moving out of her office in the dark so she wouldn’t run into anyone.”

>She was suspended and eventually fired by the university after a now-viral video showed her trying to grab a camera from student Mark Schierbecker and calling for “some muscle” to remove him from an encampment of black student protesters. An assault charge against Ms. Click was dropped when she agreed to perform 20 hours of community service.

>“While Ms. Click acknowledges that she was certainly frustrated that day, she says she was simply trying to protect the black student protesters,” The Chronicle reported. “Everything she has come to stand for since the video came out — intolerance, anger, mouthiness, and dismissiveness — is exactly the opposite of who she says she really is. Focusing on her behavior, she says, is a way to take attention away from the demands of Concerned Student 1950, the group of protesters.”
