Whats the going price for a SKS? Any reason to get one now, besides just likings sks's?
Anywhere from $350 to $500+. I bought one for $375 because I really wanted one, if you want one go for it, but I'd save a bit more and get an AK or AR that I won't have to modify or use shitty mags to get more than 10 rounds. It's a great gun, don't misunderstand, but for the price they go for anymore I'd just get something better for a little more or even the same price.
If you do decide to get one, get a Russian or a Romanian if you can find them.

Fired this beauty at the local range, but didn't catch the name or brand. Guy at the rental counter said it was brand new... I took a picture and figured I'd just find it online later, but I've browsed every AR I can find for sale and can't find what model this is.

Considering buying a Pioneer. I live in Commiefornia and it passes even this round of shitshow laws. Only issue is I hate the Mag release, you have to pinch it with one hand and pull the Mag with the other. Thoughts?

I wanted to say John Marston from RDR, but then I remembered that his story takes place in the early 20th century. But then I remembered Silas Greaves. Gunslinger was an incredibly fun in its gameplay and unique narrative. I highly recommend it if you like shooting games.

Sup /k/. I've stupidly put off buying a gun and now with the terrorist attack it looks like an "assault weapons" ban is on the way. Are there any good rifles out there in the $350-$550 range? I might be able to go a bit higher but that would really be stretching it. Also what's a good first rifle?

$550 wont get you much of quality for a new AK or AR, but take a look at the used market. If you want to get a "new" gun, an SKS is the way to go, also you may be able to build your own AR for that price, but the quality may be iffy.

Simply in the interest of part and ammunition commonality, you should probably get an AR. In the interest of saving money, you should build this AR from a stripped lower, upper, and decent parts. This will set you back probably $400-700 depending on what parts you use.

Get an A2 style front sight and that will save you about 50 bucks you wouldve had to spend on Rooty Tooty Tactical Shooty Brand Operator Flip Up-Down-Left Front Diamond Sight and now you just need to buy a rear sight. A quality but inexpensive rear sight example would be a gen 2 magpul mbus.
While the SKS is light-ish, fires an effective cartridge, accurate, reliable and generally well made, it is still antiquated WW2 era tech with a limited capacity, slower fine motor skill reload, and will be the bottle neck of a competent shooter.
