So /k/, how 'bout wooden gun cabinets? If someone wanted to get into the average safe sold at Cabela's, it'd take maybe 15-20 minutes and an angle grinder. Why should I not build a wooden cabinet out of 1 inch pine?

Is there any other prior military vets here who think Civ life is shit and would possibly consider re-enlisting if Trump became president? He actually wants to get shit done, and start putting funding back into the military where it's lacking.
Right now I'm pretty lost. I did 5 years as a grunt. Tried college but dropped out because it wasn't for me. Now I'm just working. Don't really see much of a real future for me. I'd rather not go back into the military, but for some reason Trump gives me hope.

My grandfather was the Director of US operations at Meprolight until his passing a few years back. The man knew his weapons better than anyone I've ever met, and represented Kimber, Colt, High Standard, Mossberg, Benelli, and SKB, through his job, though he was also a Browning fan, to my knowledge. Toward the end of his life, he worked more directly with Kimber, and appeared to have faith in the brand, despite some of their failings.

Judging by everything you've said, it seems like a Kimber 1911 would be your best bet. Shop around for the one you like best. You can get Meprolight sights for them.

As far as budget, I'd like to stay under $1500 or so, unless there's something I REALLY love.
I also won't pretend to be the expert he was. I certainly had gun safety and care drilled into my head as a kid, and I'm very comfortable with guns, but I don't know much, in terms of specific models and what guns are good and bad. I pretty much stuck to the guns he gave me, and learned them inside out.
I leaned more towards the /g/ side of life, through my early 20s, and only recently began shooting again.

Hey /k/, I want to buy my first handgun. As such, it'll be multi-purpose. I want it to be good enough for IPSC (I'm getting sports license), but dependable enough for personal defence and carry.
Objectives:
-accurate
-dependable
-nice trigger
Non-objectives
-light: so far I'm enjoying shooting with steel frames CZ and Tanfoglio the most, don't enjoy polymer handguns at all.
-small: I don't mind the gun printing. all I need to obey is letter of the law - have the gun in a holster, under a shirt. again, I find shooting bigger...
