Thread to discuss ideas and methodology for surviving SHTF. Time for some real talk about painful truths.
Background: Married, professional, 4 yr old daughter. Live in suburbs, near a large city but not too close. Have only a couple of weapons (12 gauge pump shotgun, Ruger 10/22).
The plan: Using a separate bank account and PO box I secured a small piece of land in the mountains. My wife has no knowledge of this. I build a small, mostly underground, 2 room shelter and stocked it with supplies. This will be my destination. I have supplies for one person to make it at least a year, and enough land for a garden to supplement it. A small creek nearby can provide additional water (I have filters). My likely plan will be to tell my wife I am going out to check on a neighbor, and then driving to my shelter.
Problems: First the wife. Do I leave her the 10/22 or bring it with me in case I need to hunt small game? I can see both ways. If roving hoards attack she will surely be raped/murdered. Do I leave the 10/22 so she has the suicide option for her and our daughter if needed? I almost think it would just get captured so might as well take it with me. Second problem – daughter. She will likely be killed or sold into sex slavery. I am not too worried about it since we can have another. Do I chance bringing a child with me or is it better to let them take their chances at home?
Final part of the plan is to act like I was kidnapped if SHTF is resolved quickly. That way my wife will treat me like a returning hero and will never know the difference.

Hey /k/ filthy nogunz here to ask a few questions. Im always seeing and hearing shit on the news and internet about guns and i want to hear from people who know what they are talking about.
First thing; 'assault weapons', what exactly is an assault weapon? How do assault weapons differ from other weapons? Can u make a weapon into an assault weapon?
Second thing; the media acts like some guns are more lethal than others. Dont all guns posses the ability to kill something? Why ban some guns and not others? Why not ban all guns? Why ban guns at all?
Third thing; does different brand ammo really matter? Shouldn't the same gun performer the same with the same caliber ammo if its a different brand?
Fourth thing; is possible to 3d print a gun and ammo? Why or why not?
Sorry for all the questions, i just hate hearing claims with no explanation or anything. Thx guys.

Mostly a buzzword. Derives from a real thing: the assault rifle. Less directly, a breaching shotgun. An assault rifle is a fairly small carbine like weapon that fires a cartridge somewhere between a traditional pistol round and rifle round. You probably already know this. Crutialy assault rifles must be light and fire in single,burst and/or full auto. A breaching shotgun is usually just a normal pump or semiauto with no stock and a short barrel.

Some guns are more lethal than others... sort of. Any class of weapon that can put out sustained controlled fire is usually considered "more dangerous". But this can also (incorrectly) be applied to rifles like the AR-15 which looks like the m4 but isn't an assault rifle because its semiauto only. Or some people are just dumb because they think a thumbhole stock constitutes an assault weapon. This is blatantly untrue.

Yes you can 3d print guns, but currently there is littl point to it. When you fire a gun there is a lot of pressure released and plastics don't last very long and the gun breaks after a hand full of shots. What is kind of taking off is 3d printing parts of guns, generally ones that don't experience explosive pressure. And in the end it is just something blown way out of proportion by the media since making firearms isn't really all that hard, and I wouldn't be surprised if even you could do it after a little research online, here, enjoy an example!

Assault weapons often refer to semi automatic rifles like your regular ak and ar rifles. It's a term they came up with to make them sound scarier.

True. Pistols and full size rifles/shotguns are on a different level from eachother.
But it still often boils down to where you got shot.

Hunting ammunition like soft point and hollow point is designed to expand rapidly and kill. It makes for a lot of energy transfer instead of just passing through you, the wound channel will be much larger. FMJ ammo is less deadly, it does more of a clean pass through.

Technically yes, because you can 3d print the receiver which is considered the "gun" on a gun.
Ammunition however cannot be printed.
I want to buy an M-14 but I'm not sure what I should pay for it. Online they range from $1,300 - $2,200
What's a fair price if I find one at a gun shop?
Also, is the socom 16 possibly a better choice? I've been told it isn't as accurate as a classic M-14.

longer the barrel more accuracy in this case. Go for M1A loaded, I bought one 3 years ago and I'm very satisfied with it. About $1500 give or take. Don't listen to milled vs cast receivers debate, there is no practical difference with current metallurgical process. And finally, don't pay any attention to that dumbfuck Ian and his M1A torture test. M1A is an improved garand design and during D day they had their garands wrapped in plastic bags while traversing the surf, if this is the kind of rifle you want know that it will serve you superbly as long as you dont pack mud in its receiver, oh the horror

classic is great, scout is best, socom is last place.
M14's are fun too shoot, can be really accurate, and are a great gun.
people will tell you there are better choices, and there might be, but none of them feel as good or look as good as the M14.

I saw this pic in another board, and I was wondering if it is legit. I have a Colt 1911 and I go to the shooting range like once a month, I'm pretty casual but it's fun. So, does the curve trajectory really work? How do I use the equation to find out the speed of the swing? It looks pretty complicated.

So I'm going to the range tomorrow with this chick. She's never shot a gun before, and I think she's in favor of gun control. She's your typical 22 year old liberal arts community college wannabe hippy type.
That being said, she's really excited about this. I've got a shot (hurr) at opening a mind up and dispelling some ignorance that she can hopefully take home and spread to her like minded friends.
Any tips on how to go about this? I'm not looking to turn this into a classroom session or a conversion attempt on political beliefs or anything, I'm just taking a good friend out for a fun day of shooting targets. I just want to take advantage of this opportunity while I've got it.

DONT bring out the assault weppans immediately. Just let her shoot unintimidating old surplus, then bust out the pistol grips. Explain to her the recoil will be lower because the gun "actually does less damage than the other ones". Only load your 30 rounders to 15-20 rounds and say it was 30.
I just picked up my first AK platform today. A RAS 47 by Century arms. What are some mods that k recommends? The only one I think i would need is a Nato length wood stock as the Warsaw style one is a little short for me. I have plans to use this as a pig stick or brush gun. Any advice?

What the fuck is the design of that muzzle brake supposed to do? Vent more gas out the side before thrusting what is the equivalent of a fart out of the brake cut? It looks like a piece of shit that was not thought out and only exists because it looks cool and the muzzle flash would be super edgy and shaped like an arrow. It's not going to diminish recoil nor will it enhance it.

What the fuck is the shape of that hand guard? No one has hands shaped like that. No one rests their fucking middle finger on anything when they're holding a rifle nor do they rest their trigger finger down and below the trigger when practicing trigger discipline. It's an unnatural position for the hand and it's not somewhere you're going to put your hand. It's there to look cool, but I'm not fucking stupid.

The slab on this trigger tells me that instead of pivoting like a normal trigger, it fucking slides backwards like a 1911 trigger, ergo it's probably mushy as fuck and useless. The best triggers are usually single-stage triggers with little travel before actually tripping the sear to release the hammer. This thing has a fucking inch of travel and is mushier than a fucking tomato. This trigger alone would prompt me to land this abomination in the fucking trash bin.

I'm assuming this is a safety. It has two fucking dots and neither of them make any fucking sense, nor does the placement of the trigger. It's unergonomic as fuck and doesn't do much to tell the user if it's on safe, if it's set to semi-automatic or if it's set to full automatic. It's a little fucking slider set behind the user's thumb. Not above it. Not slightly in front of it. Behind it.
