How do I fix this bitchass white outline? It happened when I rendered this from c4d. Not sure why. I'm a c4d newb, this is literally the first thing I've made in it.
Check what alpha you have there. Is it premultiplied or straight.

Render with Alpha, select walking ants in Photoshop, then shrink selection with whatever you need, like 1px.

I have a weird question, so I came up with a really cool Graphic for a bic lighter, and went through the process of actually putting it onto a lighter, and I wanted to put it on kickstarter because I honestly think people would fund it. However I don't know if they will approve it because of their ridiculously vague rules, what do you think? Should I even invest time into trying to get it approved or do you think they're going to kick it back because it's a lighter?
Everything I have is all original, it isn't trademarked or copyrighted,...

The article acts like any sort of scientific data went into that picture. Someone saw purty space pictures and made that thing and thats ok, dont talk about NASA images or log scales when earth is a big as the sun.
I am taking 12 months off to self-study graphic design and coding full time.
I have a basic grounding in Adobe, know my way around PS and Illustrator pretty well. I'm looking to advance my all round GD skills and get a decent understanding of front-end dev.
I have all this time on my hands. I'm starting with Lynda, Udemy, One Month etc courses and taking it from there. What would you suggest are key areas for me to focus on and also the best kinds of self-directed projects to work on for my portfolio? There are so many possible applications for design...

That stuff is only going to help you learn how to use stuff to make stuff. Graphic design principles and a lot of other stuff is completely agnostic of the software.
I've learned some graphic design from talking with designer friends, asking them about how things are put together and whatnot. Some more from design blogs and websites. But if you're going to be serious about this, please save up some money for some proper education.

You should take a look at Andrew kims portfolio. Concept designs seem to get you exposure quickly. Just redesign objects that we use day to day in a clever way. Take a look at behance.net for ideas.

So all my life iv used Gimp. I only use it to shop together silly shit for friends or for quick laughs. Is Gimp a good program in the eyes of /gd/?
Iv also been looking for a program I could use on my phone that can do simple Gimp style things, such as layering, Alpha Channeling, cutting, etc.

I use Gimp for quickly slapping things together and Photoshop for professional work. I honestly prefer the interface of Gimp in most ways but PS is the more powerful and standards-compliant tool. Torrent it though, fuck adobe.

Kerning on shift need work. Lose the stroke. Bring the margins in a bit it looks way too narrow, having the bottom margin narrower than the top makes it appear unbalanced, so does all the type crammed into the bottom.
The image isn't the most interesting thing for a cover page but a suggestion would be to try placing some of the type in that big black space you have in the middle that should be where you readers eyes should be drawn to. At the moment there's really no focal point which is kinda important if this were to be on a shelf next to other magazines.

Opinions on aaron draplin? i think he has a really neat aesthetic and i really enjoy all the work he has done.
When I started studying graphic design, I was shown a YouTube video on him lamenting the overly mechanical nature of a lot of modern designers...which I kind of agree with.
Not that I'm personally into his particular design style, but he's good at what he does, and I respect the dude's work.
