Starting with a ton of new OC.
>Yes, I am proposing that a major comic book institution change the race of one of its popular characters as it transitions to a new form of media. In this case, I want Marvel Studios to cast an Asian American actor to play the lead in the upcoming Iron Fist show it is developing for Netflix. It seems logical enough to me, though as always, there are fans who are urging Marvel to resist changing his race.
>Now, I know the topic of cross-racial casting has come up time and time again here at The Nerds of Color. And while there are a contingent of fans who don’t think such things matter — or worse, are vehemently opposed to such casting choices — I can’t help thinking that Iron Fist gives Marvel a chance to add even more diversity to its interconnected cinematic universe. Not to mention that this is a case where changing the race of the character has the potential to actually add layers of depth to the story of said character.
>First, let’s get a couple of misconceptions out of the way. My call for an Asian American Iron Fist is not meant to displace Danny Rand from the story. It is, in fact, the opposite. In my mind, casting a young Asian American in the lead role does nothing to change his classic origin: He can still be the son of a wealthy businessman. He can still accompany his family on an expedition to seek out K’un L’un. He can still train under Lei Kung, the Thunderer. He can still seek revenge against the man who killed his father. Danny being Asian American precludes none of these things.
>What does change, however, in making Danny non-white is that it removes the white savior syndrome of the original story. In the comics, it turns out Danny is the most gifted student Lei Kung had ever trained. Because of course he is. For all the fans who might decry an Iron Fist racebend, do you really want yet another white-guy-is-better-at-being-Asian-than-the-Asians story? But if Danny is Asian American, the scenes of him embracing the ways of K’un-L’un can be viewed through the lens of cultural re-connection. In fact, I’d play up Danny’s rejection of his Asian heritage prior to venturing to China. I know as someone who similarly connected to my cultural heritage later in life, that story would be deeply resonant to me. And you know what would be really dope? If the writers also played up the actual Kunlun Mountains of Chinese mythology on the show.
>It also helps that with essentially a Heroes for Hire show on the horizon, appearances by the Daughters of the Dragon, Colleen Wing and Misty Knight, can’t be that far behind either. If that happens, it’ll be nice to see the romance between Rand and Knight played out on screen as an Asian male/black female relationship. There hasn’t been one of those on television since John Cho and Gabrielle Union played a married couple on the short-lived ABC show Fast Forward.

The Defenders shows on Netflix — with Luke Cage and Jessica Jones representing — is a step in the right direction. But I feel that diversity is all for naught if yet another blue-eyed blonde superhero takes center stage.

Yes, there are stupid people that want Danny turned into a stereotype. There are plenty of stupid people with shit opinions, that doesn't make what they say matter in the slightest. Just look at /co/, it's filled with people with horrible opinions that don't matter until Rumor Rich turns them into "total legit leak from insider source" articles.
I just finished watching this. What does /co/ think of it? I thought it was pretty good. It didnt drag out the story, and gave good closure.
Gregory was extremely annoying and a useless piece of shit. The show would've been better off if they made him more aware of basically everything instead of making him an idiotic autist that drags Wirt and Beatrice into worse and worse strife.

Although I'm a long time casual TMNT fan. So I've never gotten far enough in a portrayal to where Splinter took over the foot or they did anything other than fight shredder/krane.
#51 was awful. #52 was great. Right off the bat, the Leo/Alopex fight was the kind of exciting beggining which issue 51 should have had. I wasn't bought on the new artist - too old fashioned and like old volumes. I mean, that's not bad, but it clashed with previous artists of the series. That fight, though, convinced me that he's gottten it. I now ship Leo and Alopex.
Reading through #52 right now. Really bugs me that they dropped the flashback effect in that panel in the middle.

the animation and some of the music are obviously amazing, but i was really bothered by the massive retconning and kiddification of the pride lands mythology, also the whole thing doesn't seem to fit canon-wise with Lion King 2

Okay OP, so the animation is a cut above your average cartoon aimed at very young children, but lets not get carried away.
more lion king is great, but this is never going to be what anyone wants it to be. in the end i highly doubt its going to be worth a watch.

They had far too much plot in the premiere for kids to follow, but it was broken up with very safe, shallow, childish conflicts, which in the end were dull to see played out.
At a glance, it looks like an interesting story, good voices in the cast, good music, good art, but im certain none of these will actually be used all that effectively.
TLDR
Good TLK plot, but the roar magic is out of place, and it seems it will be kiddish to actually bear watching.

Obviously there are plenty of plots where villains try to clone superman etc but what I'm suggesting here is figuring out how the DNA encodes for even one of his super abilities, and then making a formula that changes a human's DNA to match that in some way

I remember reading a story as a kid that was exactly that.
A group of people, agents I think, each got like one of Supermans powers.
I remember they kind of suffered a bit for it though, like the super breath guy had to wear a special collar so that when he breathed in he didn't explode his fragile body.

It's actually good like Daredevil if you don't get triggered by a show starring something with a pussy. You will find very little criticism that doesn't include /pol/ memes and that should tell you something.

How about: It loses all tension about halfway through and becomes a repetitive Scooby Doo chase scene for six episodes too long, then ends anticlimactically and without any emotional or thematic resolution, settling for the most basic surface-level resolution of the main storyline while leave every sub-plot hanging.
From a story structure perspective, it was a goddamn mess. They shouldn't have stretched the Kilraven storyline, which was only the last four issues of the comics, into being the focus for the entire season. It should have been a slow build into it. They shot their load way too early and it suffered because of it.
Daredevil is my favorite superhero, has been for about a decade. Also the first comics I bought when I was 13. That said, Jessica Jones is a better show. A lot of that has to do with DD not really feeling like a DD show. It's a really long origin story, so season 2 should be better. My favorite episode was Stick, because that really felt like classic DD instead of proto-DD. Tenant killed it as Killgrave, Nuke was pretty cool and it really just worked. It felt more like a superhero show than DD even with the grittiness. Although, I want to see Jessica meet Foggy in Defenders.
