Nowadays people keep using Gary Stu/Mary Sue for interchangeably for competant/badass.
It doesn't matter that it make the sotry bad or or good., as soon as a character is too good people go "oh it's a mary sue, therefore, he is bad" regardless of how it is integrated in the story or how the character is used.
It has come to the point that when someone complain about "mary sue", I disregard the opinion.
