I was looking into being an accountant and pretty much you have to start off in public accounting (which with the long hours and hell during tax week sound horrible), and relatively low pay I am getting second thoughts.
Should I switch out if I don't want to go the Public route bc I would like to be a private accountant but that pays close to nothing. I am looking into MIS right now. Any suggestions?

I feel that it depends on school to school. At my school, one professor said 97% of seniors have atleast 1 job offer before graduating and 90% have multiple.
I do not know how good the jobs are and the degree is considered pretty decent at my school as I believe we are top 20 ranked
If you don't know someone in the big 4 then you will not get a job there.
Hey /biz/, I'm interested in getting into investing but I don't have much to start with, I'm willing to lose maybe $100 on some bullshit I don't fully understand right now. I work as a data analyst and know a lot about the tech industry so would like to invest in companies I'm familiar with, but a lot of these companies' stock is worth more than $100.
Is there a way I can invest in companies like GOOGL for small dollar smounts?

I currently live in Toronto, Canada as a student with my mother and I am currently debating if I should stay here or move to San Jose, California.
Apparently, the job that I'm going for here in Toronto starts off at 58k CAD which is 44k USD. If I were to get hired as the same job in San Jose, they start off at 84k USD which is 110k CAD.
It would take me literally 6 years to get up to that salary in Toronto when I start at 100k CAD in San Jose.
Though after a little bit of comparing, the cost of living in San Jose is a little bit (27%) more expensive...

Moving for better gains is always a good idea, if you can afford it and understand the risks. Canada, especially Ontario, is a sinking ship. Brain drain will be back with a vengeance once Trump gets into office. If you can move safely then move. Look into other places outside commiefornia and see if you can find better returns
Why is it so hard to get a developer job if you don't have a fleshed out portfolio?
I have fundamental knowledge of undergrad algorithms, know how to code in multiple languages, but I can't even land a freelance job because I don't have the attention span to develop a project past a week.
What could I do about it? I work best when there's someone telling me I have shit to do. It's so hard to motivate myself to finish my own projects.

I posted here a few weeks back asking about consumer staples. I was doing some research on which ETFs to put my money into, and historically consumer staples have significantly outperformed the S&P.
I've since read a bunch more, always about how the sector yields a greater return with less volatility. There are dozens of blogs, articles (both newspaper and scholarly), and reports gushing about the positives.
Information on the negatives are harder to track down. There are periods where the sector does not outperform the broader market...

I'm a near-NEET who knows and cares very little about money. However, I just came across $20,000 that I don't have an immediate use for (I don't need it to eat, anyway), and want to put it somewhere stress-free but earning a bit of interest. Bank accounts offer .01% interest, so pretty out of the question.
