I am a High School English teacher. Last semester, I assigned my class Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, and Shakespeare's Hamlet. Pretty typical for an English class, right?
Well, one student who had already been on my nerves the entire year (and, I mean, he was constantly disruptive, would come into class wearing flashy dresses and excessive amounts of make-up, both of which being against school policy, but, you know, political-correctness. At one point, he actually had the nerve to read passages from Judith Butler's "Gender Trouble" during a lecture!) decided that the material in the books was too "triggering" for him.
OK, no big deal. I'll just let him pass on the assignment and offer him extra-credit shit, I thought, thinking he would stop making such a fuss.
Well, the next day, I walk into class only to find said student fuming, labeling me a "fascist misogynist" (I'm female, and have been sexually harassed by other faculty members AND students) and the principal breathing down my neck that the students got together and started a petition to have me fired for endorsing material which promotes "violence against women, racism, and other 'problematic views'."
I have since been suspended and am awaiting review. I'm still fuming all these months later.
