I think the way that it'll go is that Charizard X has the power advantage so Ash is going to go sanic with Greninja and get some good hits in at one point. It'll make you think Ash is about to win then Alan just brute forces it by destroying the entire arena since it can't hit Greninja (blast burn maybe) or tanking all the hits and retaliating. The writers do not care about how some grown-up autists perceive the shallowness or depth in the relationships between characters. You do not need to look further than Ash-Greninja to see this. The kids this show is aimed toward will probably not be thinking about whether something is ship bait or care much about subtleties in interactions, and take what is thrown at them at face value.
The fact that you are trying to gauge the depth of closeness between the characters is a waste of time, and not too different of a piss in the dark than that of the autists saying Ash's gestures are concretely romantic. The relationship between characters is whatever the writers say it is or write it to be, whether it's justified or not. Whether you take what is written seriously or not is irrelevant. If at any point the writers want to say the bond between two characters is extremely deep, then that is what it is, because the writers fucking say so.

The only time I recall their relationships were explicitly defined was in the relationship chart. That was fucking long time ago, and before Serena's redesign. Whether you think their closeness to each other or not is what I am saying is pointless, unless you have some solid document from the "word of god" that explicitly notes their relationships to each other as being the same. Ash gave Casey the Beedrill he won but he behaved completely differently with her. Casey's case was him basically going "here take it". In Serena's case he was asking if she'd accept the ribbon. With Casey he's pretty calm while with Serena he's a bit nervous which is why he asks if she'll accept it and he has his tic. Throw in the archive posts and there you go, the whole deal was romance oriented.

The relationship chart was explicit and was shown during the beginning of the series. Since then the two have gotten closer from traveling.The title of XY 59 ignoring the "date" bait obviously pointed to characters getting closer. There was a bit of partiality toward Ash and Serena's relationship, and the act of gift giving happened between the two. Gift giving under the tree strengthens bonds. That is about how deeply I am willing to think about it. Specifically thinking about the depth of what the character's feel toward to each other is a waste of time. Some people interpret that deeper bond as a good step toward romance, some people don't. People like me don't give a shit, because I think the writers will probably decide on how deep the relationship is at any random point if they will it.
I do not think about this show the same way that I do for other anime for some pretty obvious reasons: I'm not the audience the show is geared toward, and the writing is handled differently for marketing purposes or whatever other shitty reason there is.
