As someone who used to monitor the auction sites for Pokemon games daily, this is not true. 3rd gen (esp Emerald) is also very expensive, the market is infested with cheap chinese knock-offs so sellers of legit games keep ramping the prices up. Legit Emerald cart with scratched label and no box goes for 40$ nowadays.

It could be that whenever I play the Game Boy Pokemon games I heavily associate them with the wonder and hype of Pokemania, but there really is some magic in the early installments.
What is it about the later gens makes them feel less charming? Is it that they've redone the same formula too many times?

Game Freak's staff of 20 put more effort into the games than they do now with about 80 people.
Genwun and gentoo had simple, comfy graphics that allowed you to imprint your own ideas on them. Modern gens are just realistic and just crappy enough visually to make you lose immersion.

I'll start.
My favorite is Swampert. It's got a nice looking design, and its Ground type allows for coverage against Electric types. It can also learn several moves that can protect it against Grass types. Also, its Mega looks cool, I like the way it bulks up.
