Anyone not a fan of the visuals shown off in the new Sun/Moon trailer? It's middling in 3D and it's not very good at it.
Up until Gen V, Pokémon was refining its visual style and it was getting better and better at it. It looked unique in what it was trying to do. HGSS and BW2 were very pretty games and were on point aesthetically.
Now, it feels like Gen VII is transitioning into full 3D. It looks like a very bad looking traditional 3D RPG. I think this will really affect the exploration too, like Route design being very linear and uninteresting if the new trailer is anything to go by. Coupled with Masuda admitting to dumbing down the design of the regions back in Gen V, I feel like there's a lot going wrong right now with the design of the games.
While I don't hate what I saw in the S/M reveal, I mostly agree. It feels less like an exploration game with a puzzle element now that the overworld is more JRPG like. It feels less like Pokemon
HG/SS was my favorite aesthetically and I was excited to see how Pokemon would push the use of sprites, but nah
It's pretty clearly Pokemon still visually, I can't think of any other RPG's with the same shading style. The only issue is I worry the shift to full 3D will even further hurt region design.
BW2 looked fucking awful and pixelated. HG/SS looked awful in those instances where it tried to give a different camera perspective, too.
