The thing in the OP doesn't look like anything. It bears maybe a passing resemblance to a tiki but I could just as much say it looked like a marble bust.
Is it just me or is Litten the "normie" pokemon? I mean, I love it and it's super cute but I can't help but feel it has the most generic design of the gen 7 starters, and It's a little weird to see it have such mass appeal. Rowlet and Popplio are much more interesting visually and conceptually, although maybe that's just my opinion.
It's that generic design that allows for such mass appeal. It's cool, cute, and not too out there or alienating.

You know what I don't like about this thing? It's just a fucking sea lion. That's it. They drew a real life sea lion and made it cartoony. Seriously, it looks like someone took my mom's sea lion and put it in the game.
Older pokemon actually had personalities to them. They had quirks that separated them from actual animals. This thing? It's. Just. A. SEA LION.

Yeah, I was struck by how similar to Calem he is. Would have been a little better if his 'base' skin color was darker, would distinguish him from Calem more.
He's cute but generic. I'm all for self inserting in Pokemon and full character customization, but I also liked having actual characters I could roleplay as too. I liked doing "canon name" runs after my self insert runs.
