Try a controller. Any controller with a USB end should work.
The code is ridiculously simple, whatever was pressed most recently has priority (if anything is held down and nothing else is pressed, that has priority,) and the snake moves every X frames. It's really the only way to do this kind of game.

when certain combinations of movements are done in quick succession, the snake gets locked moving in a certain direction that can't be overwritten, once it happens it will continue trying to move in that direction any time a button is not actively being pressed, or the button being pressed is opposite to the direction
in a game that's meant to be fast paced like this with tight movement, you just can't have that happening, the fact that inputs are also not registered and buffered, and instead are just checked on every period the snake can move doesn't help either

I do have it so that you can't press opposite buttons, otherwise you'd just run into yourself constantly. I could make it so that the snake has free movement at all times, but that would more often than not make people just hit themselves constantly.
The inputs are all saved within movements. The "direction" variable only updates when a new input is put in, and it's always checking for inputs every frame. It only acts on the direction, though, every X frames. I don't know what you want in terms of buffering otherwise, do you want it so that it'll remember up right left and do those at the next chance it gets? Because at slower speeds you're talking a 30 frame buffer.
