How do expressions work in Animal Crossing and games like that? How do they switch the texture on the face part of the model?

I've been learning python on codecademy so I can give godot a proper go and improve my scripting in general...

Has anyone noticed that a fair number of these tutorials are either broken or nearly impossible to solve because they fail to communicate vital language quirks that can't be discovered through logic? This one is just fucking mystifying.

voted "bara furry" because i assume you meant those kobold nerds with bad games. their games are bad. im not even offended. im into that shit. but their games are simply poorly written and poorly presented imo, and their art ain't shit, but they're lewd adventure games so what's the point of one with non-titilating writing and bad art

Or just have different materials, one for each expression and apply them to the face as required.

What did you expect would happen? Multiplying a value by an array is usually not defined, but it's pretty intuitive that x * 5 == x + x + x + x + x, and since x was an array of length 1, you get an array of length 5

of course no devs are going to attack Gogem, they're jealous. Arikado is using nostalgia to draw peoples interest in his game. Gogem is using raw talent from the ground up.

Most Animal Crossing models are made up of 4 separate meshes, each mesh having its own texture. There is the body, the clothes, the lower face, and the upper face. The body also contains the back of the head.
The lower face has the mouth texture, which is switched between various different mouth positions for different expressions and for talking. The upper face has the eye texture which is switched out for different expressions.

I can only assume that you are gogem, since nobody else could be this delusional about your games.

Whip the vote is a generic management game with dull visuals.
Wall of our hearts is a generic "art" platformer with dull gimmick mechanics.
Slaying of sandy hook is the epitome of the terrible indie game that thinks that it's ok for the game to be subpar at everything as long as it rams a message down your throat.

There's a reason why nobody cares about any of your games, m8.

ok googum without a trip.
explain to me using game design terminology why vote the whip is a good game.
I've only seen his game webm but they don't seem like an interesting game.

Questions for though:
What is the conflict of the game?
What are the opositional forces?
How is the conflict developed?
What kind of RPS does the game have?
How many verbs can you found in the game?
How does the mechanics evolve over time that allows for a metaphorical development?
What's the wining and losing condition?
How many does the game has?
How do you prove it's an exciting and losing condition?
Where is the risk of danger, permadeath or safe danger?
What are the adjectives of the verbs of the game?
How many verbs, nouns, adjectives does the game has?
How is the pacing?

From what I've seen from gogem, trying to make him understand the concept of fun and how it relates to gameplay is always going to be a losing prospect.
When I used to HL mod back in the day, I worked with a couple of guys like Googem. No matter how many time you explained to them why an idea wasn't fun, why functional gameplay and entertainment mattered more than their ideologies about the "player experience" they wanted to express and why a novel doesn't necessarily mean fun, they would never, ever understand. And they would be completely mystified why players would freak out after an update that ruined the game with bad ideas and unnecessary changes.
Some people just lack the capacity to understand this stuff, which is where all these terrible art and political games come from.

That was the problem, but not how you think.

The first successful mod I worked on, two out of the three project leads were That Guys who got progressively worse until the intended final patch killed the playerbase.
The second project I had with a That Guy on source, he was also both the project lead and programmer and ended up putting in so many moronic changes to the original design that streamers went from playing the game for fun to playing it to make fun of it and people started sending That Guy death threats for ruining the game (which he cried about on his blog, like the special snowflake califag he was).

Never work with That Guys, they're like ideas guys who are always wrong and are actually motivated and skilled enough to put their ideas into practice.

I can't remember the name of his blog, but if you have ever heard of a mod called Double Action Boogaloo, then that's the piece of shit we ended up with.
If you haven't heard of it, it'll take too long to fully explain just how bad it was and now far it deviated from the original design document, but needless to say that we started with a competitive multiplayer fps and ended with a "game" where there were no headshots, K:D was not recorded and certain primary weapons were intentionally balanced to be dogshit, but gave double points.

most of the work done was on the underlying systems, but now it means nothing is hardcoded anymore! should be much easier to implement things from now on, and that also means that you can interact with stuff like axes and fruit just the same. i accidentally commented the part where unequipping tries to put the item back in your inventory for this video, but it's working too!

also i made a really simple tree planting thing just to show how everything has its own interaction when equipped. it'll obviously not going instantly spawn a fully grown tree in the future

Obfuscating everything a couple times will deter most people.
But the autism of some can never be stopped.

I plan on testing it on my own game to see how much work it'd take.

You don't switch textures. you basically make a "mega" texture, for example if your mouth is 128x128 pixels, and you want 4 mouth expressions, then your mouth texture is going to be 128x512 pixels. one time 128 pixels in height, and four times 128 pixels in length, like for example pic related. Now you only need to move your texture 128 pixels along the x axis depending on what engine you use, for each expression. In unity for example that would be the X offset in the material options. Now in order to "change expressions" you only need to make it so that your script changes the x offset number in the material, based on what expression you want, which you could do with a switch fuction for example.

Only and absolute retard wastes time with anti cheat in single player games of any size.

Only large AAA multiplayer games requre cheating, you will never be producing them and as such have no reason to waste time on such frivolous pursuits. Better spend that time learning art because you fucking suck at it.
>>
>>140715020
External files as much as possible, this also allows you to do localization (or even free fan translations if you let them edit).
You'd use an enum or other method to get the appropriate string in your code.

Anyone here use MMF2?
I've been working slowly on a JRPG-esque game for a while now, and the platform has proven to be both frustrating and liberating.
>>
>>140714863
That is stupid as fuck, you need to have instance of a texture for every character. It is better to have separate material with texture for each expression and then you only switch materials and use 4 materials instances total which is much cheaper.
>>
>>140715250
Separate textures prevents batching if you're rendering a lot of the same object.
Very big deal for 2D games.
>>
>>140715350
Only if you care to draw hundred+ instances of sprites.

Write a system called "Variable Handler"

invoke the methods
RegisterVariable(name,Type)
GetVariable(Name,Value)
SetVariable(Name,Value)

Registering a variable creates two separate variables to store the value and a hash value to convert variable 1 into variable 2.

All variable functions are handled through the setter and getter functions.

The Get function will first confirm that the value of variable2 is equal to the hashed value of variable1, if so, it will return variable 1. If not, it will crash the program.

This will ensure that no direct memory attacks that do not know the hash value that is created on the registration are capable of actually applying to the variable without crashing.

If this seems like way more autism than is worth it, you're correct!

They've been doing that shit the way i described in games since ps1 actually, i am surprised that animal crossing doesn't, maybe it depends on what the programmers or designers prefer. If you rip original game textures though you often see "megatextures", especially in anime graphic games. You also see the technique in a lot of 3d forums.
It is also cheaper to just change the float on the texture/material x offset instead of changing textures/materials all the time, from what i know.

Pic related is a "megatexture" from a pokemon 3ds game.

For loops are limited and stop at the end of whatever they're iterating.
While loops create infinite loops that persist and can crash literally everything if the loop is to create an object or some similar function, and the problem will persist unless you kill the program or shut down your computer.

Let's say we have for every instance of X, create thing.
The thing being created can only happen so many times, even if it's too little or too much.
However instead if you have while x=x, create thing (implying you accidentally wrote a condition to always be true), then the thing is gonna be created infinitely and cause a lot of problems.

There are many complexity levels for pixel drawings.

I've been dicking around, with some pauses, with this bunch of trees since yesterday noon and I'm still not satisfied with them.

I'm sure there are much faster ways to achieve similar or better results, but I'm just that much of an incompetent faggot.

You should be able to throw together things quickly if you settle for simpler forms.

How many players?
I also remember some headaches with bug hunting. Because when a player discovered a bug he abused the shit out of it and then lied to the GM's face about it. Like one dupe bug was fun, i logged in one day and found out that almost everyone had a rare as fuck and expensive mount. Some of them 5 of them. Yes, there is. Look into "interfaces". tl;dr of what it is: You can set a generic "interface" to trigger - I have mine set to my "use" key; what I'd do in your case was make it trigger instead of "Cast to fruit tree" and linked to the Hit Actor; then in the Fruit Tree (or whichever object) you can make a message node and have other things trigger based on that.

Let me grab a screencap of how I have mine set up.

See pic related. The background window is my Player BP; foreground is whatever object I want to be "Used". The Interface is a separate blueprint, but it has to be "included" in whatever you use with the Class Settings button (highlighted in bottom window); Add [interfacename] to enable it.

What this does is it allows me to not check if an object is a specific type inside whatever's checking for it and instead do all of the object-specific functions in the object itself. Or, technically, anything else that requires BP "communications".

In the top window, the Equip Notifier and the Use Function are both wired to "Hit Actor" from the Raycast. When they're triggered, IFF the Event for that interface is included, it will also be triggered and you can do whatever you need to with that execution line.

The Interface itself is a pretty boring tab; just don't forget to add the actual Function you need at the right, or else you won't be able to do anything. You can also add inputs and outputs, but I've never needed to so I have zero experience with that.

In terms of code clarity, it's pretty obvious that its purpose is "skip the base case to avoid a segfault in the following if statement". I think either approach is fine. Code legibility and making intentions clear is important when working in teams.

They're saying he should just replace "int counter = 0;" and "if (counter == 0) continue;" with "int counter = 1;"
>>
>>140736680
The point of the loop is to compare each element to the one before it, so how are you going to compare the zero element to anything? Theres nothing before it.
>>
>>140736201
It's not.
If you want to have code clarity just write your comment "skip the base case to avoid a segfault in the following if statement" before the for loop and start with 1.

Also having avoidable if statements in a loop is a bad habit, you are depending on the compiler to optimize it out or your code will slow down considerately (depending on the size of the loop and how often you invoke it).
>>
>>140736880
You don't need to compare the zeroth element, the idea is to check if a list is sorted, so no matter what the zeroth element is, the next one just has to be bigger.

I'm mostly talking about improving type systems, compilers, etc. through lessons from type theory and category theory and that whole branch of mathematics. Like in Rust, using a linear (well, affine, really) type system.

I mean, this is JBlow's alleged reasoning for not having smart pointers:
>In C++ this is accomplished through a unique_ptr<T>, but Blow thinks that this is the wrong way to do it because the template approach now masks the true type of the object. A unique_ptr<node> is no longer a node, it’s a unique_ptr masquerading as a node. It’s preferable to retain the type of node*, and retain the properties of node*-ness that go along with it, because we don’t really actually care about unique_ptr for its own sake.
How unique_ptr<T> is so much more horrible than T* is a mystery to me.

That's an impressive wiki. Do you have a lot of people working on the project or something?
>>
>>140743719
By using a divide and conquer approach:

1. take the middle element as a pivot and partition the list into 2 sublists
2. check that the middle element of the left sublist is less than the pivot and that the middle element of the right sublist is greater than the pivot
3. process the sublists recursively in this manner

This might end up still having a worst case of O(n) comparisons, but it's still a better algorithm
>>

meme computing

also you're right and anon is confusing those two
>>
>>140743719
I can kinda see what he's getting at. If you split the sequence in two, you can check them both at once, then it just remains to see if the last element of the first sequence is less than the first element of the second. Because you can theoretically do the recursive steps in parallel, it can run in O(n) time.

and who cares about anything other than the worse case. linear search determines an array isn't sorted in constant time if, say, it's in reverse sorted order

Hey guys having a bit of trouble.
I'm generating pyramids with varying sizes and height, and I'd like to apply a material to them, the same way it's done for primitives.

In the pastebin there's my UV, verts and triangle setting functions, and it's obviously not working. Any ideas?

Not give a shit about an overly academic problem like this.
>>
>>140745341
I don't know Unity but I feel like GetEnemiesKilled() should exist in some kind of game manager class, not on the enemy controller
>>
>>140745341
Make GetEnemiesKilled() a static function of the Enemy class so you don't need any enemies to exist to call it, it'd be
EnemyBehaviour.GetEnemiesKilled()

But to your real question, just add a
if(enemy)
before you call enemy.getenemeskilled()
>>
>>140745689
Big Data guys only care about the worst case, and everybody else just goes by how it runs on a real machine.

Who cares about average case when you can measure how it runs in an average scenario?
>>
>>140745689
Let's first create a function that analyzes this 20 element array to see witch algorithm would be best fit to check if it is sorted.
>>
bogo sort
>>
>>140745952
kek. It's funny because this approach is actually good for some problems.
>>
>>140745341
So if the function you're trying to call has nothing to do with any specific instance of the game object you want a "static" method.

If you're actually referencing a specific object and variables stored there in then you do just want to place one somewhere.

If I'm reading this code right you're populating the contents of some variables at the Initializer ( Start() in this case) and then on update you're referencing a function in that instance you populated.

I don't see any reason why you would be storing the GetEnemiesKilled() method on each individual enemy though. Just use a static variable and what ever function is updating the enemieskilled number should reference that.

would read as follows.

public static int EnemiesKilled = 0;

void Start () {
scoreText = GameObject.Find("text-score").GetComponent<Text>();
}

// Update is called once per frame
void Update () {
scoreText.text = EnemiesKilled.ToString();
}

No object reference required. then just make your enemies increment EnemiesKilled when they die.

Not if you can solve the problem faster than analyzing it. But yeah, strategy pattern has it's uses.
>>
isn't linear search to verify if an array is sorted better than linear in average-case anyway? someone who actually CS prove this for me
>>
>>140746471
That's got nothing to do with the strategy pattern.

Strategy is the OOP bastardization of a first class function.
>>
>>140746471
An example is multipliying a bunch of matrices. It's a good approach to first see which is the best order to multiply them in.

If statement isn't required, first part sorted it and don't need to reference the object anymore, so it's cleaner. Haha seems so simple now.

everything about my array handling was getting fucked, and i forgot about it.

i was removing array items because i read that was the best way to do it, but turns out that the way i was doing it it was also changing the index of everything. when a function (such as use or drop) got called and refreshed the inventory everything would be messed up.
say we have 0,1,2,3. remove two: you should have 0,1,3, right? it wasn't happening that way. it would basically get a null on that 3rd item that doesn't exist anymore, go nuts and do whatever it felt like (still have no idea what exactly it was doing)

i solved it by making it so instead of removing an array item, it just sets the index i messed with to a null reference. i had to make it so my inventory actually worked with null references, too, else it'd fuck up. a few changes here and there and i got it to work!

Restarting a time trial takes about 3 seconds if you do it with the restart button, which you have to hold for 3 seconds before it starts loading.
There is a skill tree to unlock moves from the previous game.
Momentum doesn't mean shit, you can super man vault off every waist high object and your speed has no influence on how far/high you go. Same goes for wall running, which takes you in a perfectly straight path along the wall.
A weird object lock-on which forces you in line with the thing you're doing your action off.

Hey /agdg/ should I try making a rougelike for my first game or would that be a bad idea? I know java and a good amount of c#, i'm usually a musicfag here I just don't really know where to start when it comes to getting the game going.

It doesn't matter. It goes like this: I have money to go to court. Do you? No? Let's settle out of court. :)
>>
>>140757804
>ouldn't it be too expensive for them to take you to court if they didn't have an actual reason to sue you?
Do not underestimate troll companies with money.

it's roguelike not rougelike you fucking dumbass

For some reason this isn't working...

I'm using sprites and bones, with their IK things (the thing that you move around and it moves your arm).

How can I adjust the transform position of the IK via a script?

I quite literally can't even hardcode anything in to test.

I've tried things like:

Transform LeftArmLower_IK = GameObject.Find ("Player/Skeleton/IK/LeftArmLower_IK").transform;

(Is there a better way to do the above?)

LeftArmLower_IK.position = new Vector3(1,1,0);

But it doesn't seem to be working. (Even when I try in the update function).

Also, I'm displaying Debug.Log(LeftArmLower_IK.position )

and it's not the same as the value it shows in the editor.

Hey fampai, any recommendations for a GUI library for Love2D? What's important for me that when I dispatch an event the lib will tell me if any widget handled the event so I won't click through UI with my regular mouse handlers.

They can literally make anything up and you have nothing you can do against them because they have more money.
Do you fancy yourself proving them wrong in court and wasting god knows how much of your money?
>>
>>140757934
roguelikes are definitely one of the easiest genres to program because you don't even need an event loop or anything, you can just update the game state on keypresses

they're good programming practice

It's better to be safe than sorry

No but I'd pay out of pocket just to counter-sue with false claims and harassment.

but have you tried making a visual novel?

I've got hundreds of thousands behind me and decades of legal experience. You want to go that route? Why not just settle. :) You won't win. You will lose everything.

Tell us how it goes.
This would only work if you fought against a broke indie, not a corporation with more money in the bank

Yeah, have fun getting your name plastered all over gaming media and your victim becoming a martyr.

You're assuming the governmental process has its citizens' interests in mind, when it has no reason to do so.
>>
>>140758550
You're naive as hell.
Money is the key to everything and the legal system isn't fair.
They'll just keep paying lawyers until they find a way to weasel out of it and by dragging the case on and on all you do is lose money until you have nothing
>>
>>140758217
thanks for the advice!
>>
>>140758576
A corporation is probably more likely to go the cheap route and pay the $500 or whatever instead of putting their $2000/hr team of lawyers on it

Those numbers are made up but you know
>>
>>140758738
>They'll just keep paying lawyers
And theres a thing called a restraining order.
And even if you sue through proxy, it doesn't matter.
How many stories of non-mega-corp vs mega-corp patent trolling do you hear be succesful?

>>
>>140759169
the general consensus is "there doesn't need to be a reason, any suit can be brought for any reason or no reason and prevailing can often be determined by pocketbook."

This isn't entirely true, there are cases that can get thrown out without merit pretty quickly, but it's also possible to make a lot of motions that require a lawyer to respond to and will cause them to prevail if not responded to.

Basically if you have at least a $15k warchest it's very probable to win a baseless case and perhaps even recover your legal fees for wasting the courts time with an obviously frivolous suit. If you don't have $15,000 however.. then it gets.. dicey.

I've never done skeleton stuff so I'm not too sure, but are you sure Debug.Log(LeftArmLower_IK.position )
is the same as maybe Debug.Log(LeftArmLower_IK.transform.position )?

Also the sprite looks pretty cool m8.

Anyway, some progress in the form of shitty explosions when enemies run into spikes.

Suing for slander.

Then suing separately for libel. :)
>>
>>140759690
is it actually time already or just beating the rush?
>>
>>140759708
I wouldn't slander you. I would just give media the facts and let them decide what to do with it.
And libel doesn't apply here if it's documented that you're suing me.
>>
>>140759857
Not fucking around with page 9-10 anymore.

I'm fairly certain since the type is Transform, you can skip the transform part of transform.position. I'll give it a try though.

I think I might have to animate the arm instead, though that will be harder.
