With just arrow keys, you can cover movement and attacking very easily. Automatically picking up items would probably make sense. However, accessing the menu would be an issue. If you added a menu button, the UI may be obtuse, but you could theoretically do pretty much anything that way. Make the GUI slick enough and it might hold on the market, yeah.

I'm shooting for something closer to a traditional roguelike, though. My gimmick is that you control a squad of adventurers, so the format is a little different, but it's basically the same.

Real talk, working with it is pretty painful, and I think I might actually have an easier time using something more flexible. I'm thinking of making a tolerable prototype here, then taking the project to Lua/LOVE, or maybe Haxe/HaxeFlixel, but I've heard mixed results on the latter. I dunno.

Does anyone feel like it isn't worth doing anything that isn't unique or envelope-pushing? In such a powerful and underutilized medium shouldn't we be doing anything but trying to develop games that imitate ones we already like? Life is short and we could be doing so much more.

This thought has caused me to put down everything I've worked on so far and try to rethink it all. Am I wrong?

I'm trying to think of how best to structure character in unreal. So I want to give them all stats, health, take damage, etc. The catch is the player is actually 4 party members, but they're represented by a single PartyCharacter in-game, while enemies are each represented 1:1 with a Character.

So do I make 4 Characters and just turn them invisible and leave them at 0,0 so they can inherit the same CustomCharacter class as the enemies? I was going to do that, but the low bullet speed made me think of a mechanic I would like to try. I'm thinking that if you pass through the bullet with a dash, the character absorbs it and delivers a melee attack. I'll see if I can get it working by the next time I post progress.

Rewrote the class handling elemental and status effect resistances. Now classes can alter character resistances and you can alter resistances mid battle with skills.

For status effects, instead of percentage resistances, I used an enum with Neutral, Immune, and Weak entries (100% chance if Weak, 0% if Immune). The game's already getting too complex imo, so I'm gonna keep as many things as I can simple as possible.

Also made the Battle Victory EXP stuff a bit smoother.

Sorry for the shoddy bitrate near the end.

And yeah, in that webm, it's going from Neutral to Weak, and being immune to an element doesn't make you immune to things that lower your resist to that element. Now that you bring it up, the message is kinda unclear. Will probably make it more explicit later.

Said I was doing combat next, but realized the current system couldn't support multiple player characters, so I added that relatively easily. Then I had to edit the camera to follow each player, which turned out to be the bigger change in the end. Shit got broken, it was embarrassing.

All's well now. The line of sight code still doesn't support multiple players, but I didn't notice until I'd already made the gif. It'll be a relatively quick fix, though the extra cycles aren't really desirable. I might come up with a new algorithm to avoid basically running the entire thing once for each player, but for the demo, this is acceptable. /blog

No engine is specific to that sort of gameplay. I'd suggest Unity due to personal preference and simplicity though.

There isn't an optimization that I know of, no. I don't personally know of even a single roguelike with multiple player characters, so it isn't terribly well explored territory. I'll give it some thought, though, and post anything I come up with.
That said, no, I'm not really worried about performance. If I was going to have 50+ characters, maybe I would be, but this is going to allow maybe 4. So yeah, fuck it. It'll work well enough.

I wasn't actually sure if spells should be in a separate area of the menu or not, hence the fake button on the right.

You'll get even more distortion with other projections.
If the screens were curved, so each point of the screen is at a same distance from the eye, then yes, the cylindrical procreation would work.
But screens are flat.
