New machine gun. Jets used to fire each bullet individually, which was impossible for the player to aim and use effectively. Now it's just a small area in front of the player that takes damage, with its position changing based on speed and (eventually) turning
No visuals yet. I plan to add tracers and some barrel flashes on the planes. Haven't reimplemented a cooldown yet, and haven't implemented the new gun in the AI, either

I think I may have figured it out. I think what I'll do is make two or three levels from each mythology, and place them next to each other. Every level will be designed to look like a cave, but they'll all be different (one might look more like a desert cave, another might look like a jungle cave, etc.) I have a bunch of generic enemies that can go in each level, like bats and spiders, and like I said, I'll put a bunch of unique enemies from each mythology in its own level.
Sound good?

>>136147817
The problem with pursuing this art style is that it would increase the scope of the game by at least a year or two. While it's something that I one day want to try and I can see your point of view, I can't do it for a project this size. That being said, I could probably be working a bit faster.
>>136149737
>>136149780
Perhaps. I'm looking for something a little more subtle or concise. The only name I found in my brief research was Kadali, which doesn't really fit. Maybe I could put a spin on the word Platano into something.

I did originally make him with nomral Shy Guy mask stuff, but when I put the eyes in it felt like he'd work better with a Snifit style mask.
I can't really get rid of the eyes though, as that's supposed to be tied to his partner skill. He acts as Watt did, making invisible things visible, by doing a night vision mode thing.
Does this look better? I could do a thing where the eyes instead pop out when going recon mode.

The autistic fag complaining about English speakers is correct.
The message starts out sounding like it's supposed to be advertising the event to /v/ users and implies that the devs it's addressing are not people who participate in /agdg/.
The intended message about the competition details comes through in the last few sentences, but those quirks in perspective are strange and off-putting to fluent English speakers.
Hey, guys we've got a bunch of guys don't know how to communicate with people getting chewed out by a guy who gets irrationally angry about minor problems while ignoring the big picture and none of it has to do with actual game dev progress.
...I think you've managed distill the essence of /agdg/ right there in that exchange, fellas.
>>136161196

advertising your game is just as important as programming and art
>>136161330
If your trying to sell your game.
But this isnt amateur game market general.
Its a development general.
Lets talk about devving not selling.
>>136161330
Fyi, the message doesn't imply anything about promoting the winner, unless you assume that people dumb enough to shill their game on /v/ by saying that they won an "award" in an /agdg/ thread.
Trying to do this during a time when /v/ is hyped on professional AAA products is pretty much worst idea possible and not having any sort of mechanism for getting /v/ involved in the voting is basically consigning it to irrelevancy at best (angry backlash and scorn is more likely though).

blender is shit dude
even little stuff like importing models, it fucks up the scaling, and even blender experts usually have a bit chart near their desk to remember all the hotkeys
Well /agdg/, a lovely deviant from /trash/ offered to help redesign my shy girl villain concept.
They got me a really great sketch of how it should look, and now I'm trying to make the sketch to Paper Mario's style.
What do you think of the color scheme options I've got so far?
I feel like the blue and black looks better, but I also worry that it may be a bit overdone.
The orange came from the anon's drawing, as they outlined it in orange and it actually seemed like a good base color, but I'm not sure if it's better than the blue/black.
Thoughts?
>>136165764
the orange is a lot more striking
if they are to be an important character, consider the orange
class Tile {
bool isOccupied;
GameObject objectOnThis;
}
is "isOccupied" unnecessary here? Because if I check if objectOnThis is null or not I can determine if it's occupied or not but somehow it feels like it's better to put "isOccupied". How do I get better at making decisions like these? What terms should I search for? "list of principles" maybe?
I know I don't know something but I don't know what to search for.
>>136165732
the problem is not that I don't know the hotkeys. I'm actually pretty damn proficient with it (or at least it feels like it). My problems is the actual 3d knowledge. I tried to start the head with a circle and try to form the proper edge loops and angles but everytime I end up with a shitton of vertices in some location and if I try to remove some it just makes the mesh fubar right there.
Maybe I just don't have the right process.
>>136165898
It is very unnecessary, and will require extra work to keep them synchronized.
Instead, you should have a method isOccupied that will return (objectOnThis != null).
>>136165874
Main villain level important.
Also, reposting the lovely design that anon gave me cause god damn, they did it really quick and it looks pretty nice. I just gave them the rough and ugly concept I had started on and explained the problems I was having with it and they got back to me with this.
You'd be surprised what gems you find in the /trash/.

>You'd be surprised what gems you find in the /trash/.
Is that so? I was quite interested in the board right when it came up, but after browsing it for a few days that one pokemen screencap meme came to mind ("nope, there's only trash here").
Is it basically a b-lite?

You dense son? The compiler calculates that automatically and it becomes a constant, it's written explicitly so it doesn't look like a magic number

Most card games use 5 card hands. I've heard a certain designer theorize that this is because most people can only focus on 5-8 items at a time without chunking so games with small hands are easier for new players to pick up and consequently stay popular.
Do you think this can be somehow applied to figuring out the optimal size for the board of a Chess-like game? Is there any research on this? I imagine that even beginners don't treat each square as A Thing and chunk space, but with what method?
Updated track and added foreground and backgrounds, not sure why, it almost makes me want to vomit.

Also what's with your level man... Is that just one big image? That's not really a practical way to build levels.
If not making it tile based, you should at the very least break the level into chunks (ie something like ramps, straights, mountains, etc that you can just stamp down where needed)
Also: Get some more parallax action going on in your background to make it more visually appealing.

I'm making an RPG about video game characters escaping their games on an emulation / rom hosting server. Here's the current party.
Can you guys help me name them?
Also, what do you guys think of having a rival party of characters being the "bad guys"? Like, the shades-wearing platformer dude is from some crappy one-off product-tie-in platformer, while the rival party's platformer dude would be from a Mario-tier super popular platformer. Is the "rag-tag group of B-grade heroes end up saving the world" idea too played out? And how do I even design a 'rival' version of a mouse cursor?

Yeah, I considered making 'the player' be the bad guy (after the characters realise they're still in a game). But then, how do I even do that? Do they stop obeying your commands? Do you no longer control them, and then they fight your cursor or something?
Another idea I had was for the bad guy to be a video game character that somehow realised the whole "outside world" is still in a game, while no one else believes it. So he's trying to stop you from beating the game, because once you beat it you'll likely never play it again, leaving the characters in limbo.

I want to try my hand at making a "maker" but I have no idea how to do this particular function.
>>136174817
You need to stop posting this project until you finish it. Nintendo with C&D this hard if they catch wind.
If you want to keep posting your progress, use placeholder sprites with no connection to mario.
>>136175067
Game maker translate the drag and drop function into gml, which is a simplified language. Then the language is interpreted and translated into an executable. It's easy you just have to press a button.
It's very powerfull to learn, but you're gonna have hard time making a full game with it.
It's not impossible, though.
>>136174741
You check collisions by comparing coordinates of bounding boxes. You don't need Box2D to do that.

Are they going to track my IP through 4chan because I've been posting a bunch of fanart that you could find just as thuroughly and well done on Deviantart,
specifically being posted in a /vg/ thread with 78 people?
Hell, even on /v/ and shit, I don't see how they could C&D me just from anonymous posts. They need a lot more information to do so and they really only do it if the game generates HUGE amounts of draw, usually right before release dates posted on blogs and whatnot.
I've done my research into how these things work.

1. It's fun.
I've been working on thesis shit for a year and a half now and I needed something to bring back the spark I used to have for making things like this.
2. HIGHLY educational.
Like, holy fuck I've learned so much about coding from all this shit that I have been severly missing out on since I've always been more of a 3D generalist than a coder.
3. Will make a lot of people happy.
If i can do this right, I'm certain that there'd be people wanting to play this game. I won't make any money off of it of course, but I'll have the satisfaction of knowing something I made really delivered what the masses wanted (ideally).
4. Possible notoriety.
Obviously I'll be anonymous throughout the whole production. But when I'm done with it, I'll come out in the open and give my name and whatnot so it'll be known who done it. Even if I get a C&D after releasing it, it's already on the internet and free meaning it can't be truly stopped, so my name can go out like that.
5. Fanart.
Outside of money, the best thing I think I could expect from this is if people actually took the characters I came up with and wrote, and made fanart with them. It's a bit much to go saying that I think it'll happen, but I hope I can make this of a good enough quality to inspire some people at least.Especially wouldn't mind some lewds of them if I hit it big.

Again, not really how this works.
Y'see, the only real issue when it comes down to things like this is actually trademark infringement usually, as it can otherwise be put under nebulous fair use and other copyright stuff.
Trademark is trickier though, as there they can say that it's existence hurts their name and thus press charges.
That said, they don't normally push fines on fan projects. Instead, they simply demand the product be taken down from whatever source the authors hosted it on.
From there, negotiations about what can stay and what must be taken down can go through (in many cases, the dev blogs are allowed to stay up as long as they post that the project is no longer in production and remove the agreed upon assets).
Companies don't outright sue their fans without a proper C&D first. Because suing is a hassle, even for companies with ungodly amounts of money. A C&D is "meet our demands, or we will sue you". Also, it is often a written letter requiring a signature as a binding document to prove you recieved it, rather than an email which can be tampered with/claimed lost.
As such, if I keep from giving them anything to send a C&D to until release, then after release they'll likely send a C&D saying to take the game down.

Dude AGDG barely has 200 unique consistent IPs and you want an entire board?
>hentai games on /h/

All those communities are smaller than this place.
It would be a waste of space, everything would move at a snail's pace. I mean Aggidaggy itself is average when it comes to /vg/ general speed. In the time we finish a thread, /lolg/ has finished like 5 or 6, maybe more. (while /domg/ or /rlg/ would only get 100-200 replies in the same time)
Remove shitposting and keep only progress and the thread would be even slower. Until we start switching threads every hour, there's no need for an entire board.

Is it okay to use up a lot of space to save the effort of computing certain values? I'm using a hex grid and instead of storing it in a 2D array with offset coordinates I'm thinking of just storing it as a 3D array, most of which will be empty, and access cells directly with axial coordinates.

I don't mind the scaling myself, it's reminiscent of old Treasure games (Guardian Heroes, Astro Boy Omega Factor) and their cheap enemy reuse. Though, the current sprites are small and low-detail, so the effect doesn't work as well. On the other hand, I could make it so the small sprites upscale to a certain point, then switch out to "new" graphics (e.g redrawn at that size) and upscale those until the next threshold. The alternate alternative is doing it in hand-drawn images with a base resolution of 1920*1080 and then scaling down so I can actually play it on my shitty laptop, but the downscale would look like ass and people with higher-res systems would get ultralag and shitty upscaled art anyway

Say I want to send a bullet from point A to point B at speed Z. I subtract the two points to get a vector from A to B, calculate the distance between A and B then divide the vector so it moves at speed Z.
If the resulting vector has fractions then I have to round it down because my coordinates can only tolerate integers, which is obviously problematic because it will create a wholly different line. What's the canon way to handle this?

Maybe I'm an idiot. Should have I somehow used floating point numbers for screen coordinates?
Over a great distance the rounding will sometimes cause the line to deviate from the target.

yea those flat parts inside the circle are to do with the shader used to render the platforms invisible, im trying to fix it at the moment, and yea i was considering having a small effect inside the circle around the player so thanks for the advice
>>136198828
> f(x) = 1 - exp(-kx)
"f" is a function of "x", i.e. your output curve, and "x" is your input variable.
That is, "f" would be on the y-axis in that graph, and "x" on the x-axis.
"exp" is the exponential function, and "k" some constant, which is called lambda in your picture.
It's just algebraic math basically.
How bad are you at this stuff?
So lets say I'm an aspiring music dude who wants to sell his music to video game developers. Where do I market myself? Do people more often ask you to make music specifically for their game or do they buy tracks?
>>136199081
>>136198448
Not sure if I really get what you are saying but it sounds like coordinate system is too small
>>136199081
Use floating physics and calculate coordinates at each step for rendering.
>>136199362
>Do people more often ask you to make music specifically for their game or do they buy tracks?
Custom music is the only music worth paying for. There are a million starving musicians making free packs of music for people to use, so no one is going to buy that, unless you're some next level shit
>>136199362
>Do people more often ask you to make music specifically for their game or do they buy tracks?
I've done both
Do you have a soundcloud/something with a large sample of your work?
Is your music in any games already? (either given free or paid for)

Weeee, I finally finished my dialog creation/edition tool. I could have kept my old dialog scripting system, but with the switch from 3D to 2D, I decided to code an interface for Unity3D and rework most of the old code.
Among other things, the tool can export the dialogs as files in order to save them, or to allow for easy translation in other languages.
