The minutemen are a civilian militia that has no qualms with anyone unless you, the leader of the Minutemen, actively antagonize one party or another. They don't even oppose the Institute.
They just fight raiders and chase feral ghouls off farms, that's the extent of their plan to help the Commonwealth. Meanwhile, the Institute and BoS could be wreaking havoc or planning a massive takeover and the Minutemen would know jack shit about it.

Maxson came to the Commonwealth with the specific intention of starting a war.
Let's try to keep thinks in perspective. There are no saints in a war. Nobody can win by not getting their hands dirty at all. You make a choice on what side you support and do what you can to minimize the casualties. That's the best "good" choice you can make, considering.
But if there were no casualties to speak of, if the SS had nothing to lose, no moral dilemma to face, no weight to their choices, no sacrifices to make, no guilt to live with - it would have been too easy.

I do have to say that because whites are the default character in the game, characters made are going to have a tendency to resemble Europeans in little ways based on that alone.
Saints Row had the same problem, though that was solved, at least for me, by making a character, watching him in cutscenes, and then tweaking him afterwards, instead of trying to make him from scratch.
