also, fun fact: tech 5 seems to have infinite penetration through objects, even though its sprite doesn't. i've noticed on multiple occasions that it's hit a rock and still damaged enemies behind it.

A fair doze of randomness is what usually does it for me.
Judging from your screenshot - I would flatten and soften the shores, and make the smaller rivers a bit more twisty. Also, think of rivers as evolving structures, they're constantly moving sand and mud with them, chaning shapes over millennia - and they're leaving a trail of hills and canyons after them. Include these things in your map to improve realism.
