It's a fun game to play if you already walk a lot. I'm in my mid twenties and look young so it's not too weird for me to be walking around parks. It was literally only occupied by two 300 CP Rapidashes. I just had to weaken them with my two water pokemon, and finish them off with my 423 CP Fearow. I'm only Level 9.
The gym only started to work by the 4th or 5th time I came around. You basically have to knock the gym's prestige down to 0, and every time you win you decrease the prestige by 2500. Took me around 5 or so total battles. You basically have to find a game winning team comp and keep at it. Be sure to dodge(swipe to the side) and use your 'mon's abilities(tap and hold on your Poke). You walk to the same places to get stuff to do the same things. You can't catch pokemon consistently. People just aren't going to keep walking to the post office or the local church every day.
Most normal people aren't playing Pokemon Go to take over gyms, they just want to catch a single pokemon. Among most of my friends, half of them already dropped the game because you can't even battle friends or anyone around you. Even the gym function is almost completely passive. Maybe, just maybe it'll have as active a playerbase that ingress has in about a month.
