Excellent atmosphere creates immersion. A great example is Metro 2033.
one thing most people forget that needs to be there for immersion is extremely tight controls. you need to feel like you're connected physically, so having responsive and sensitive controls really is important.
it's why amnesia games are more immersive than say, early silent hill games.
yfw RPGs are a dying breed. Skyrim with butchered RPG mechanics. FO4 with butchered RPG mechanics. Mass Effect reduced RPG mechanics from sequel to sequel.

As someone who also loved Asylum and City, I'd honestly say don't bother.
Knight was such a disappointment in terms of gameplay, however you may as well close out the trilogy by playing it.
